Week 30 - Challenger (€42,500) - Guimarăes, Portugal (Hard)

L32: Alexander Ward WR 350 v (8) Josselin Ouanna (FRA) WR 160

Will be interesting to see if Alex can take his clay form onto the hard courts.

Bit of a challenge in terms of an opening round. But good to see Mr Ward a DA into a Challenger Main Draw.

He got better draws when he qualified LOL

Ouanna hit a career high of 88 in 2008. They have met once before, at Wimbledon qualifying in 2010, where the Frenchman won 6 & 3.

I think Alex can do the job there

Joss Ouanna is one of my personal faves - an exceptionally talented ball striker but a guy with his head all over the place.

If Joss is having a good day, I don't think Alex stands much chance; luckily for Alex, Joss's good days and his 'off with the fairies' days sort of balance out and you never know what you'll get.

Some funny tweets from Alex:

Alex Ward ‏@AlexWard1990 17h

Flying to Porto tomorrow with Ryanair. Big packing decisions....who's gonna make the cut? #foamroller #blender #supplements #dumbbells?!

Alex Ward ‏@AlexWard1990 6h

My luggage somehow passed the Ryanair 'weigh in'. Made some great packing decisions last night i think! Right who wants to lend me a racket?

I assume Steve Thornley and David Rice are playing county week? There byes in some of challenger doubles this week on top of some really low cuts in singles, it seems like points are going begging hmm

Yes, great to see him living with this kind of player even in a hard court Challenger now. It shows what having a go at getting used to playing at this level can do

L32: Alexander Ward WR 355 lost to (8) Josselin Ouanna (FRA) WR 165 (CH 88 in 2009) by 3-6 6-3 7-5
