GB on a shirt, Davis Cup still gleaming, 79 years of hurt, never stopped us dreaming ... 29/11/2015 that dream came true!
Slight suprise that JWH lost to Coupland, but George looked a good grass courter.
O'Mara has a tough match, but is in good form
Expect Broady, Cox, Willis, Bloomers, Slabba, Daniell, Pauffley and Benneteau to come through. 6 GB in QF hopefully

Well I ended up making the long trek to Felixstowe today, and yes they did charge a fiver for entrance. Firstly I don't know what happened to Tom but while I can't be certain I don't think it was that serious. He was walking round after the match and he didn't look like someone who had just picked up a major injury.
O'Mara put in a solid and professional display. Nothing spectacular, aside from a diving backhand volley, but he was in control from start to finish. Biggest positive was his serve which was much better than any other time I have seen him play.
Broady deserved his win. Best I have seen him play in a while and his forehand looks to be in very good nick. That being said Gabb was poor and his game isn't really suited to grass. In any event Liam does seem to have got his head together so hopefully he can press on and he has a very winnable second round.
Ireland v Malik was an interesting match. Ireland is said to dislike playing on grass, has never won a main draw futures match on the surface prior to today and lost to Peniston last week so I thought that Malik was favourite going into the match. Ireland however came out a played some lovely grass court tennis, he must have serve and volleyed on at least 60% of the points and was net rushing at almost every opportunity. While his volleys weren't the most technically proficient your will ever see they were pretty effective and he deservingly won in straight sets. If I was to guess I would say that maybe he just decided on an all or nothing approach for his last grass tournament of the year. Malik did however feel more than a little aggrieved with several umpiring decisions, having had no less than 6 furious arguments with the umpire throughout the match, including calling him f***ing blind on one occasion (he then felt aggrieved to get a code violation) and he refused to shake his hand at the end. I have to say that there was some justification for his anger as some of the calls did look to be very bad and frequently came on big points.
Bloomers looked in pretty good from and crucially he served well so that result was never really in doubt. When Bloomers serves well on a quickish court he is way, way too good for most players at this level. Surprisingly he didn't serve and volley that much but he didn't really need to.
I only saw the second set of Aswat v Thornton-Brown but Aswat did fight back from 1-4* to win the first set. Going by the second set I can see why he tweeted that they both played awful although that was perhaps a bit harsh. Aswat doesn't have a grass court game but he does have some good skills and a pretty nice backhand. He is very raw but there does look to be some real talent there. He could probably do with bulking up a bit as well.
Thanks for the report RJA. Great to get a taste for the matches, even though it just makes me even more jealous !!
I take it you didn't see any of JWH v George C ?
PS Was it worth the fiver ?
I didn't see anything significant of JWH v Coupland. While that was being played I had one eye on Broady v Gabb (court 2) and one eye on Ireland v Malik (court 3) so I couldn't follow a match on court 5 at the same time. The courts used at Felixstowe are side by side in a long row (see photo below of 6 umpires sitting in a row). As for being worth a fiver, I watched 5 and half hours of live tennis (would have been longer if I had stayed for the doubles) so I don't see how anyone who likes tennis can consider that anything other than great value for money, even if the viewing options on all the courts bar court 1 were limited. Of course I spent much more than a fiver given that it was a 320 mile round trip so I suspect that most would consider that to be somewhat less than value for money, not to mention the travelling time involved.
Thanks here too. always really interesting. Glad you thought that Liam thoroughly deserved it - nothing against Richard but I was pleased for Liam, especailly if he's playing (and behaving) well.
