Week 28 - Summer Universiade - Kazan, Russia (Hard)

The Universiade (aka World University Games) is currently taking place in Kazan. I've put this in the women's section because Anna Fitzpatrick is the Brit making the most progress.

Men's singles

L64: Scott Whitbread UNR lost to Eric Johnson (USA) UNR by 4 & 4
L64: Chris Simpson UNR beat Angarag Sandag (MGL) UNR by 0 & 0

L32: Chris Simpson UNR lost to (2) Huang Liang-Chi (TPE) WR 300 by 6-3 7-6(6)

Women's singles

L64: Anna Fitzpatrick WR 795 beat Miriam Nyakudzuka (ZIM) UNR by 0 & 0
L64: Daneika Borthwick WR 862 beat Nzingah Banks (ANU) UNR by 0 & 0

Double bagels were a fairly frequent occurrence in this round. ANU is Anguilla, btw.

L32: Anna Fitzpatrick WR 795 beat Anaïs van Cauter (FRA) UNR by 3 & 3
L32: Daneika Borthwick WR 862 lost to Sabrina Santamaria (USA) UNR by 0 & 2 bleh

Santamaria has a CH of 819 set in 2010 and had upset the 2nd seed, world no. 107 Kumkhum, 5 & 5 in the previous round.

L16: Anna Fitzpatrick WR 795 beat Cynthia Setyawan (INA) UNR by 1 & 4

Anna was lucky that one seed in her section (top seed & world no. 66 Shvedova) withdrew but has made the most of that good fortune - Anna's her L32 victim had upset the other seed in her 1/8th of the draw. She is now one win away from a medal, since there is no play-off for 3rd place.

QF: Anna Fitzpatrick WR 795 v (7) Katerina Vankova (CZE) WR 319 - Sunday 09.00 local / 06.00 BST

H2H 1-1 - Vankova won in straight sets when they last met on hard courts in 2007 but Anna won their last meeting in straight sets in Bournemouth last year.

Men's doubles

L32: Dan Cochrane & Scott Whitbread beat Vatsy Rakotondramanga & Antso Rakotondramanga (MAD) by 2 & 4

L16: Dan Cochrane & Scott Whitbread lost to (6) Perakiat Siriluethaiwattana  & Kittiphong Wachiramanowong (THA) by 7-6(5) 7-6(2)

Women's doubles

L32: Daneika Borthwick & Amanda Elliott beat Rieke Honiball & Imke Jagau (NAM) by 0 & 4

L16: Daneika Borthwick & Amanda Elliott lost to (3) Hsieh Shu-Ying & Hsu Wen-Hsin (TPE) by 2-6 6-2 10:8

Mixed doubles

L32: Daniel Cochrane & Anna Fitzpatrick beat Margadmun Munkhbayar & Jargal Altansarnai (MGL) by 3 & 1

L16:Daniel Cochrane & Anna Fitzpatrick v (7) Michal Pazicky & Karin Morgosova (SVK)

The last match above is in progress at the moment, 3-3 in the 1st set at the last update.

Previous GB medal winners

Singles

Tokyo 1967 - Nell Truman - women's gold
Buffalo 1993 - Jeffrey Hunter - men's silver
Buffalo 1993 - Samantha Smith - women's bronze
Beijing 2001 - Amanda Janes - women's bronze

Doubles

Tokyo 1967 - Frances MacLennan & Nell Truman - women's bronze
Kobe 1985 - Elizabeth Jones & Joy Tacon - women's silver
Sheffield 1991 - Jeffrey Hunter & Mark Loosemore - men's silver
Fukuoka 1995 - Nicholas Adams & Richard Holden - men's silver
Fukuoka 1995 - Samantha Smith & Paul Robinson - mixed silver
Daegu 2003 - Iain Bates & Jim May - men's gold
Belgrade 2009 - Max Jones & Dominic Inglot - men's silver
Belgrade 2009 - Samantha Murray & Dominic Inglot - mixed bronze

(*) the records just say "Truman" - my first guess was Christine Truman (who was of course a later medallist's mother) but this was a few years after she won Roland Garros, so it seems unlikely to be her. Maybe it was though - I remember Judy Murray saying she played Virginia Ruzici at this event many years ago when Ruzici was in the top 10!

Christine Truman had a sister Nell who played tennis and was a good doubles player I am sure she played Wightman Cup Doubles with Christine.

Well done - I just checked and it is mentioned in her obituary - http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/apr/17/nell-truman - so aunt and niece won medals 34 years apart then.

Santamaria is an excellent college player, not surprised at Daniekas loss, but was at the scoreline.

QF: Daniel Cochrane & Anna Fitzpatrick lost to (2) Lee Hsin-Han & Lee Hua-Chen (TPE) 6-3 5-7 8-10 cry

There were sporadic livescores throughout the MTB, updating every few minutes from *4-1 to 6-5* to 8-9* and then agonisingly 8-10.

One more chance for a medal tomorrow, Anna's singles QF is 2nd on not before 10:30 local, 7:30 BST.

Anna: "Dan and I gave it everything. It wasn't enough. Lost 10-8 in the third set tiebreak. Both absolutely gutted. Impossibly close to a medal"
