He's making heavier weather of this than I expected, but Oli is now *3-1 up in the 3rd.

Oli won 6-1 in the third. May be enough to make the top 500.

Out of interest is this long stint on clay a plan for Olly's future development? Sort of wondering why he skipped the whole grass season?

Well, that's already Oli's fifth best point result (for his current 12 month points total) so well done on that.

And it's true that Laurent has had some good domestic results and plays pretty well (although he IS only 1288 in the world and there's no getting round that so let's not get carried away).

Anyway, a big step up tomorrow so good luck Oli - wishing you well.

First proper test for Oli today against a player ranked inside 400, but outside 300.

Currently 1-6 0-2*

Lost all 5 of his service games. 15 points to his opponent's 34.

Let's see some fighting spirit, because frankly this is a pretty poor effort, I think we would all agree. Come on!

Oli seems to be having major problems with his serve - 7 DF and conceding 9 BP, of which 6 converted by Gigounon.

However, it's a best of three . . . .

QF: (7) Oli Golding WR 529 lost to (3) Germain Gigounon (BEL) WR 317 by 1 & 2

Oli broke serve 3/7 times but didn't manage to hold once in 8 attempts. Bizarre.

Oh dear. I wasn't really expecting Oli to win but I expected a respectable scoreline.

Meanwhile in Germany Jiri Vesely has just reached the final of a 125K + H challenger and will be well inside the top 100 on Monday.

Twelve double-faults, when you've only served 8 times, is dreadful. No wonder he got broken 6 times.

(just noticed that the stats I'm looking at aren't quite the same as Steven's - in fact, ITF live scoring has had different match stats from Bet365 all week - don;t know if it's that)

However, it all comes down to the same thing !

Great choice of tournament. Good draw. No unholy mess up in the first rounds. But the first time against a decently ranked player (the other two were UNR and 1200+) it's a non-match. Disappointing. Await to see tweet . . .
