Week 27 - Challenger (€106,500+H) - Braunschweig, Germany (Clay)

QR1: (q4) Daniel Smethurst WR 395 v Bye

QR1: (q5) Alex Ward WR 396 v Bye

QR2: (q4) Daniel Smethurst WR 395 v Marek Pesicka (CZE) UNR or (wc) Daniel Hoeppner (GER) UNR

QR2: (q5) Alex Ward WR 396 v Andreas Siljestrom (SWE) UNR or (wc) Andre Wiesler (GER) UNR

And would you believe it. They are in the same section of the draw.

That must be a mistake on the draw sheet. Should say 5 points.

Assuming that one of these two come through there is a tempting (Q) v (Q) slot in the main draw.

It has now been changed and you are correct. 5 points at stake.

Some slightly bad news here. 2nd qualifying seed Ivo Minar has just lost in the final round of qualifying so will be ahead of the loser of Smetty v Ward if a LL spot comes up.

Great that, once again, a Brit will make the MD of a Challenger.

That makes Alex 9-1 in clay Challenger qualies this month! Dan will be 2nd in line for a LL spot whatever happens in the remaining FQR match.

Phau is 33 and has not played for nine weeks. He is at home though. Laaskonen and Millman have both beaten him on clay this year, so it is not impossible.

Obviously we would have preferred the (Q) v (Q) slot but at least he avoided Tobias Kamke which would likely have been too big an ask. In the circumstances Alex could certainly give a Phau a good match.
