RE: Week 26/27 - Wimbledon women's main draw - grass

Let's be realistic - the British girls got really tough draws. Anyone with a WC will have to punch well above their weight to be competitive, never mind win.

Realistically Laura and Hev always were our best chances(only direct acceptances) and they have tough draws.

I expect the media will have a real go if no GB girls get to the 2nd rnd, but you have to realise that Tennis is a 11 month season and not just 2 weeks in June.

I remember watching Sam win a match in Bournemouth a couple of years ago when she was ranked 809, she is now 232. That is pretty good progress, particularly for someone who only really joined the circuit in her 20s. She just played her first match at Wimbledon. It was against a top 100 player and she went down 3 and 4 why are some people so negative? To win a set would have been a really excellent result. She fully deserved her wildcard, is clearly still developing and I expect to see her join the top 200 set before too long.

Jo has the game to trouble top players. As it becomes more consistent she will move up the rankings. She played a really good 2nd set but as Virginia said something happened after hitting that brilliant back hand winner down the line because she hardly won a point after that. Up till then she looked as if she was gradually getting on top and I expected her to take the set. Maybe she suddenly realised she really could take a former world no. 1 to a third set and tightened up.

Elena played well and fought hard but met Pennetta on one of her good days, when she really played like a former world no. 10.

Murray is almost done on centre court so I assume that they will put Anne's match on there which will be very nice for her.

Ive been thinking with Anne's match TBA to court yet, she will most likely be put onto Centre court to play her match after Andy wins... Does any one feel that the AELT know something we dont know i.e this might be potentially her last tournament!

My thoughts exactly when I saw the OOP!

I've got centre court tickets for tomorrow and will not be able to see either Laura or Heather.  Wish I could drop out and watch on TV at home, but it would not be tactful to the person who asked me!

JoKo played great in the second set, needs to maintain that level at the smaller tournaments and top 100 is a realistic target at the very least.
I thought if we got 2 through that would be good, I'll take any now.
The press will have a field day but I don't really care anymore what that lot have to say at Wimby.

Elena seems quite upbeat - this seems to be the only GB interview transcript up so far on the women's side:
