Weeks 26 & 27: Wimbledon (grass) - doubles

For the record (the doubles qualies don't seem to have been recorded elsewhere):

QR1:  (q1) Dustin Brown & Rameez Junaid (GER/AUS) WR 194 defeated Ed Corrie & Neal Skupski WR 852 by 6-7(2) 6-3 6-3  cry
QR1:  (q7) Steve Johnson & Andreas Siljeström (USA/SWE) WR 264 defeated Lewis Burton & Dan Evans WR 894 by 7-6(7) 4-6 11-9  cry
QR1:  Andreas Haider-Maurer & Jiri Vesely (AUT/CZE) UNR defeated (q6) Brydan Klein & Dane Propoggia (AUS) WR 232 by 7-6(2) 6-2  bleh

Given the huge disparity in rankings, it's to Ed's & Neal's & Lewis' & Dan's credit that they appear to have made them competitive encounters.

Starting this now because Colin & Jonny have been seeded ninth & TCH & Dom 16th.

Interestingly (I've been away for a few days & only just noticed), while Jamie Baker & Kyle Edmund & the Doc & Sean T ( biggrin ) have been awarded WCs, as we knew last week, with a third going to the "Aussie Scrapper", Lleyton Hewitt, & Mark Knowles, the web site says that the other four were not used & will go to the next DAs.  Couldn't the buggers at least have seen their way to giving the Skupskis one of those remaining four? furious

They couldn't because Ken is already in with Malisse. Would have had to go to Neal and Ed Corrie ... which would have been a reach (though I would have been pleased).

Ah, fair enough then.  I don't think I'd registered that fact (assuming it's been mentioned somewhere on here).  Thanks for putting me right, Spectator.  At least he has a half-way decent partner for the tournament. smile  I, too, would have been pleased to see Neal S & Ed Corrie awarded a wild card, but I agree with you that that would've been pushing it a bit.

They are all recorded individually in the "Wimbledon Men's Qualifying" thread, but are a bit lost in there! .....and it was a proper set 11-9 games were played.

OK, understood.  Thanks for pointing that out. smile  Having been away for a few days, starved of Internet access ( ) & thus reliant on the Beeb's "Teletext", in which there are glaring gaps in the tennis info provided as far as I'm concerned, i.e. no doubles results of any kind provided unless they're from a Grand Slam tournament...  ), I had no idea (couldn't imagine doubles results being recorded on what was essentially a singles qualies thread) that anybody had bothered & no time to check back more than 2-3 pages.  Have edited my original post accordingly.

P.S.  "WD40"?  Love it! biggrin

This will be Jamie Delgado's 19th consecutive Wimbledon. He first played Doubles here in 1995 and has done so in every subsequent event since then with the exception of 1999. He played Singles in 1997 and then every year between 1999 and 2006.

Why did Kudla/Smyczek get a lucky loser spot here when they gave a walkover in their final qualifying match? Also Rochus got a lucky loser after retiring in his last match. Unbelievable there is not a rule against this.

I don't know what the Kudla/Smyczek situation was but Rochus was two sets up when he retired in his FQR match and I think I remember someone (Ben Rothenburg) writing that he was inconsolable after he had to retire, so assuming he has recovered in the intervening period and isn't just going to hobble onto court to claim the R1 loser money, that particular LL spot seems to have worked out well.

Oh, look, Bob in Spain, I've found a doubles thread, under the mattress (hangs head in shame).

Well done to Ken and Xav - and paves the way for all our doubles teams ?
