That's brilliant. And would mean that in the semis he'll play Botzer, the 19 year-old who's only 944 in the world (although he did beat George Morgan and then the no 2 seed).
And today's singles win will guarantee Ash a place in the top 500 for the first time, somewhere around the 480 mark - with hopefully more points to come this week.
Excellent news. Ashley will be the 15th player in the top 15 with Slabba, Dan Cox, Fitzy, Marcus and Oli not far off joining them. The depth is there, just need these top 500 to push on again.
I have just looked at George's career record and was surprised at just how unimpressive it is.
George has now played 54 futures events. He has won 1 and reached 3 semi-finals (these successes spread over a 3 year period). Apart from that he has lost in the second round on 19 occasions and the first round on 31 occasions. He also played Challenger / ATP / Grand Slam qualifying on 8 occasions, all on home soil, and only managing 3 first round wins all against fairly weak British opposition. He has never beat a top 300 player and has only won 10 matches against top 500 players.
3rd straight year of maximum LTA funding as a Team Aegon player, chosen ahead of many other possible candidates.
He won the Orange Bowl as a junior. Since then......
Choosing the right players to back at the elite level must be fraught with difficulty..........there must be a temptatation to lower the funding levels (eg capping the travel and hotel support p.a.), but increase the spread of players.....yet that's the opposite of what seems to have happened.
I believe Ashley and George both train in Bolton and the age gap is less than a year.......is George SO SO much better than Ashley that he deserves max funding for the last 3 years, with Ash getting minimal support in comparison. This trip must be surreal for both.....
Have a look at Morgans twitter and you will see all you need to know about his commitment in singles.
