Well, everyone has on days and off days, and losing to someone ranked 100 places higher in three sets doesn't seem to count as a catastrophically off day. Lovely for Messieurs Baker, Bogdanovic and Rice. More than respectable for Mr Corrie. Given that only Mr Bogdanovic was playing someone ranked lower than he, that's not a bad day.
Doubles on now. Skupski/Corrie won first set 7-6(2) but losing the second 6-3 (and it hasn't been that close). Burton/Evans lost a very close first set 7-6(7).
Corrie/Skupski (N) broken again, to lose 7-6(2), 3-6, 3-6. No shame in that against the number one seeds, who are both very capable doubles players. Very good sign for the future.
I made it to Roehampton fro a couple of hours this afternoon and here's my take, for what it's worth:
Boggo - only saw last 3 games. The couple next to me said they both were poor and Boggo was 'less poor' but, from the little I saw, Alex was calm and cool and doing what needed to be done with no problem. So I'm ignoring the couple next to me . . .
Goodall - saw last 4 games plus tie-break. A real serve-fest, as you'd imagine, and Josh was playing pretty well but, in the tie-break, it didn't matter when he he was 4-1 up, 5-3 up or even 6-4 up, you still knew that he was going to lose. It was something in the body language, the facial expression - it was just waiting to happen.
Burton - honourable presentation against a guy ranked a LOT higher. Dustin was the better player but Lewis gave a good account of himself. 6-4, 6-3 was right and proper.
Josh Ward -Hibbert - amazing ! Best match ever ! That man will be in the top 100 or I'm a monkey's uncle. (Not saying quite when, though). Excellent match, both players played extremely well. The American deserved to win but only because he showed slightly more experience at key points. Same score (practically) as Burton's but not the same profile of match at all - Josh was right up there.
Ed Corrie - another brilliant match to watch. So impressed by Ed. He really knew his game, knew what he wanted and needed to do, and put it all into place. A real no-nonsense, down-to-business, intelligent approach. He has nothing to reproach himself for (except at 5-5 in the third when he'd done all the hard work to break back, got Marchenko all rattled because he'd served for the set and got broken embarrassingly, and then came out and played a sloppy game).
Dave Rice - really disappointed. I hope it was because he was nervous (and well done to him, of course, for winning) but Dave was awkward, off-balance and looked like someone playing badminton in the back garden, especially in the first set which was dreadful. Luckily, of course, the other guy was truly dire.
Dan Evans - thought Dan played pretty well but, as RJA says, his opponent was remarkably at ease on grass and played a clever, primarily defensive game which Dan couldn't really get to grips with. (NB Dan's behaviour was A1 fine - the ball abuse warning is a real red herring).

And there we were thinking it was because Dan had a new tattoo.
Clearly everyone's a bit upset about Evo's result, and like most i really hoped he would win today.
Evo is a bit inconsistent at best and is deffo an emotional player. I think the fact he didn't get a Wimbledon WC (based on his Queens performance its a decision I disagree with) played on his mind and he wasn't at his best today.
So yes, I'm disappointed with the result, but maybe not surprised......

Just wanted to say thanks to CD for the reports. Feeling a little isolated on the other side of the world while all this tennis is going on, so it is great to get a really good flavour of the events.
Have to say, from what I have seen of JWH, I am pretty excited about his prospects as well. Seems like a decent down-to-earth guy too from what little I have seen of him.

Made me laugh the way you put that coup especially about the other guy being truly dire. I see he wasn't even ranked inside the top 500 so what was he doing there? How come he was there?
I take it you think Rice will struggle to make the main draw!
