That caps a miserable day for the both of them but in Dan's case I think it is for the best that they didn't make it through to the doubles main draw. Regardless of the fact that I don't think he has anything to be ashamed of today it seemed pretty clear that he had very high expectations of this week and his disappointment is likely to be equally high, even more so if it is true that he missed out on a MDWC because of an off the court incident. I don't really think that hanging around Wimbledon for a few days to play doubles would be the best way for him to get over that disappointment as it would only serve to remind him of what he has missed out on. Much better IMO that he starts planning for the next few months and personally I hope he heads out to the US for some challengers and maybe some ATP qualifying. No good hanging around playing the 10K Grass futures in the UK. He needs to be playing at a higher level week in week out.
