Delighted for Mr Marray. I remember last year he said (taking it as a positive and without any trace of resentment) that a highly ranked tennis player had said to him, after his championship, "Well, I guess I'll be seeing you around for the next year." At the time, I was unhappy on his behalf; the implication (if the quote was reported correctly) seemed a bit that he was a flash in the pan who next year would drop his Wimbledon points and then go back to the lower levels where he belonged. But in fact, even if Mr Marray and Mr Fleming went out in the first round of Wimbledon, he'd still be well within the top 50, and so able to keep going at ATP level. Well done to him for making the best of his exceptional victory ... and ensuring that he can continue to play at a top level. Three cheers.
Yes I think there was a fairly widespread view among other top payers that Jonny didn't belong playing at that and that his presence that was a fluke. This was of course most unfair as you can't win Wimbledon (the only tournament played to 5 sets) by fluke. Perhaps just as important was that at first I don't think Jonny really believed that he belonged there either. Worst case scenario now is that he will be around WR 40 after Wimbledon and hopefully a fair bit higher and so any doubt in his mind over whether he belongs there should be removed.
That's made my day! I hardly dared hope when I logged off at work to come home with the score at 3-6 2-1*... Well done, boys, on more than justifying your seeding!
