Week 25 - ATP 250 - Eastbourne, UK (grass)

The Alund v Bant double bagel included Bant serving 11 DFs in his 6 service games, and only winning 30% of his first serves when they went in. I hope this is a case of just freezing on the day, rather than a reflection of his ability. He must surely be better than this.

Bant's sole ranking point came against another unranked Brit at the Nottingham futures last year. I watched his second round match the day after and he was totally outclassed by Pauffley and lost 3 and 0 (or something like that) and based on his results this year there is nothing to suggest that he should be a ranked player. Did seem like a nice lad though so I hope he isn't too traumatised by this result.

Main draw is out and the news is very good. Ward plays Tomic (Anderson ar Benneteau in R2) while Edmund plays a qualifier (Simon in R2)

Sorry to be a grinch, but I'm going for the full house of Brit losses to non-Brits today in QR1, followed by no successes in QR2. Hopefully I am reverse-jinxing the boys.

The match I'm most interested in is Liam against Sean. Liam is the singles player with all the previous fanfare (and considerable success as a junior), but his first 6-8 months as a pro have been littered with setbacks and disappointments. And that's an understatement. We should all expect Liam to win by rights, but I don't think its going to happen. Ironically his re-recruitment by the LTA has seen his form plummet, although I suspect that's a coincidence.

I think the odds are against the Brits in every single match so you are not being unreasonable.

As for Liam, things were already going wrong for him before he returned to the LTA fold. His problems seemed to start pretty much immediately after Wimbledon 2011 and in retrospect reaching the boys final seems to have been the worse thing to ever happen to him. I just don't think he was ready for the hype and the massive increase in his own expectations. As for his return to the LTA, my concern is not so much that he did so but that I am not sure that he did it for the right reasons.

Perhaps a bit more strength in depth than usual but there are always some very good players in qualifying here.

O'Mara seems to have been replaced in the draw by Marcus Daniell.

Perhaps I'm in a pessimistic mood - but looks to me like slaughter of the Brits day. Dan S is already 0-3 down.

The only ones to get through is Brit vs Brit I think.

5-0 down smetty now and the majority of our other guys are a break down after a few games. No real surprise.

O'Mara appears on the bottom of the draw sheet as an alternate. I would guess that they screwed up with the original draw and left Daniell out by mistake and then had to put him in when they realised. If so that is terrible luck for Jonny as he would surely have got a wild card ahead of either Bant or Sterland-Markovic.

Gabb is a break up. Broady takes the first set against Thornley (6-1) but elsewhere it is sheer carnage.
