Hell's bell's. Another classic Wozniacki performance.

She has just been completely and utterly battered by Jamie Hampton in Set 1 (down a break twice; winners flying past her; 5 set points faced), but won the set anyway!!!!!

Very windy conditions. But Hampton hat 23 winners (incl 1 ace), so net 22 off the ground; Wozniacki 8 winners (incl 6 aces), so net 2 off the ground. 2 winners vs 23 in an entire set! Literally all she did was keep the ball in play up the middle, with OK pace on her backhand, and little pace with her half moonball forehand.......

The entire set totally reliant on how Hampton was playing. No ambition herself, very little entertainment for the crowd (unless they enjoy seeing someone running a lot and bunting it forward). Not sure whether I despise the whole attitude, or admire her for sticking to this junior-centric gamestyle so doggedly despite every one pointing out she will never ever win a GS this way.

The thing is though that Wozniacki is very, very good at what she does do, otherwise she would not be a top 10 player..........but I agree that she will never win a GS playing with that style.........even more in the near future I expect her to start slowly dropping down the rankings as the young, big hitting new generation start to rise up the rankings and start to learn how to blow her off the court.

So in the end, thankfully, Jamie Hampton won the match.

55 winners for Hampton (incl aces). 18 for Woz (incl 7 aces) - so just 11 excluding serve......in 3 long sets of tennis incl a TB and a 7-5......and from what I saw, probably 6 or 7 of those were "placed" passing shots because her opponent had gone to the net by choice. So I reckon on average 1 or 2 winners per set off the ground where Woz was forcing the play from the rally.

The commentators (incl Jo Durie) were talking about her using a new racquet to give more power, but they felt this was utterly pointless if she continued to refuse to flatten out her forehand.....it really is a semi moonball with tons of top spin.

As WD40 says, she's the master at consistency and retrieval. But where's the ambition? Does it not hurt Caroline's pride when the top players routinely thrash her now? A little like Wimbledon FC in the late 1980s - who had a long ball/set piece approach to scoring a goal a game, and an entirely defensive gameplan solely design to stifle, disrupt and even intimidate the opposition - you knew on their day they could win a one-off match even against the best, but did anyone (apart from Wimbledon FC fans) admire them, enjoy watching them, or feel happy about paying good money to see them play anti-football?

Hampton is an object lesson in patience.
Repeatedly injured and unable to get any form together, Heather beat her quite easily at Wimby last year, and almost everyone just dismissed her as, at best, 'meh'.
Finally given a run of 6 months mostly injury free, and look at her know. Final of a Premier level event (as a qualifier), R4 at the French, SF in Brussels, and playing very smart tennis.
Top 25 now, come the new rankings, and if she wins, a whisker away from top 20.
Very happy for her, she seems very normal, humble (not the PseudoFed kind) and unfussy.

We may have to wait until Hev & Laura are ~24 (for alternative reasons) before we see them make their best move. But, I fear we'll crucify them before that.

And, tie of R1 at SW19 Jamie Hampton vs. Sloane Stephens. I hope to goodness that that one is streamed, should be a cracker.

She's a character as well in a very laid back way.
