RE: Wild Cards and Play Offs

It's funny because last year Neil was very angry that the last wildcard wasn't used last year and given to the next player out the main draw instead of Clement.

Can't have it both ways just to have a dig at some Brits, oh wait, in this country that's what the media do all the time.

He doesn't mention Mahut, but he doesn't like players from rich countries getting huge handouts, Edmund and Keothavong in this case. I would cut and paste one of my posts from a couple of months ago saying EXACTLY THAT, but I'm on a train so you'll have to take it on trust.

I'm halfway through his book. Very interesting for all us tennis fans, of course. And I do like his writing style and his obvious passion and knowledge. But the constant name-dropping, glamorous location-dropping......and his systematic attempts to bring any general tennis discussion back to himself and his own relationships with players, coaches and administrators becomes almost overpowering. The reader is (deliberately) left with the impression that a small army of players and key decision-makers from around the world are forever seeking Harman's personal advice on all matters tennis and non-tennis related, from the mundane to the life-changing. It is equally clear that the desire for access to the very top people in the sport inevitably compromises his objectivity (at least on paper) and that his has clear favourites amongst the players. At times I find his inability/lack of desire to remain on the outside and commentate, rather than be part of the story, almost insufferable.

Still recommend it though.

I think his views on WCs are naive in this case.

Yes, I tend to agree with you. But he can still be right sometimes, and if you will forgive some more truly cosmic pretentiousness, let me address PaulM's attack on Neil's alleged, er, "inconsistency" by quoting from John Maynard Keynes:

"When someone persuades me that I am wrong, I change my mind. What do you do?"

cry

sooo dan was given a MDWC only to have it revoked moments later as the AELTC found out about the 'event' just when Leon etc left the meeting, and so were called back in... so in this case, the LTA were actually sticking up for him apparently, but when wimbledon found out had no choice but to leave the decision up to them.

BTBB - I have no diea what this event is ? Are you allowed to tell us ?

On the face of it, I see full well that Dan and the LTA have to sort out their rules and regulations between themselves - it's a financial and commitment thing.

However, what have the AELTC got to do with anything ? Why should Dan's arrangements with the LTA be any concern of the AELTC ? If the LTA recommend him, then that that is the LTA's recommendation, period. If Andy Murray has a falling out with HIS coach, is the AELTC going to put Andy's match on an outside court to 'punish' HIM ? I know that this is not the right analogy because Andy is not funded but my point is that the AELTC don't fund Dan either.

im not sure if its okay to post the details on here... it's nothing racist, not really alcohol related, just pretty vile (IMO) laddish behaviour... the press apparently has a hold of it so you may open your paper tomorrow and find it in there

AELTC decide the wimbledon wildcards. LTA only make recommendations which AELTC Committee can ignore if they wish.

and with regards to the AELTC, i guess they just figured if he was in the MD then he would be under even more scrutiny from the press would make it an even bigger thing, and they wouldn't want their name associated with it all

The AELTC has a brand, and they need to protect it. And if it is actually the case (and while I have no reason to believe that it isn't, I would never go simply on hearsay) that Mr Evans - despite his tennis gifts - doesn't necessarily have the good sense to behave as a public figure, I can see why they would act accordingly.

I hope Mr Evans continues his upward trajectory of good play and that he and those who are, by his own account, working with him on his behaviour get a consistent upward trajectory there, too. And that the press steer clear. Nothing in the public interest here, and prurience is unpleasant.

he seems genuinely regretful about it this time... and whilst i don't think we will ever see a jamie baker style attitude from him, maybe this right here is the turning point... posters were speculating of when the turning point was, but my guess would be right now... missing out on a MDWC when he is playing some of his best tennis ever, well he must feel like a prat... i would love for him to be upgraded but maybe not being given the MDWC is what will finally make him kick himself and sort it out!!

hopefully!

turning to the playoffs... good luck to everyone, cheering for ricey especially :) ... quick hint- if you were in the area and wanting to watch, whilst you cannot get into aorangi to watch, if it rains it will be moved indoors to the NTC and i can't see any reason they would not let spectators in!!

I'm being very dim here, but if there is a 250 ranking rule, how come Kyle gets a wildcard ?

The guidelines specifically make exceptions for young players.

Thanks for that. I'm not prying (though certainly curious!) but 'vile laddish behaviour' sounds a bit more than missing curfew. And, yes, I can think of lots of examples of this sort of thing which would certainly anger the powers that be. And rightly so.

So, Dan, if you really can't behave, your only choice is to let your racket do the talking - good luck against the big man today. (There seems to be a strong train of thought that as long as you win, the public will forgive anything. Not sure about the message this sends out but there's certainly some truth in it).

And after you put up a good show (win???) against Del Potro, get back to the gym, buy a new Ninendo game for evening amusement, and think what a prat you'll feel at 35 if all your known for is the one who blew it big time.

Perhaps they're confident enough in Dan's ability to think giving him a QWC gives us an extra man in the Main Draw and Dan some extra Qualifying ranking points/prize money...
