"Nick Brown was a 29-year old British wild card ranked 591st when he took down the huge serving Ivanisevic, then the No. 10 seed."
In fact, Brown had been around WR 250 at the entry deadline (he had dropped over 300 places on the first day of Wimbledon, having reached the semi-finals of Manchester ATP the previous year), so they didn't actually give out a wild card to a 29-y-o Brit ranked outside the top 500 at the time it was given to him.
However, in mid-May that year, there were no Brits inside the top 200 (Andrew Castle was GB no. 1 at WR 204), just 10 in the top 500 and just 16 in the top 700, so things were far worse then than they are now, yet they still gave 6 of the main draw wild cards to Brits. 4 of them got winnable R1 draws and 3 of them won.

Didn't really know where to post it but as this may be his last appearance, this seems as good as anywhere:
Josh Goodall has tweeted that he is retiring.
Looking for work as a coach, seemingly.
I wasn't his greatest fan but wish him well for the future, in all his projects and endeavors.
Interesting that Josh has announced his retirement and yet is now on the entry list for Felixstowe next month. I know the withdrawal deadline is next week so he can still pull out but I am surprised that he has put his name down in the 1st place.
So is his retirement immediate, at the end of the grass court season or the end of the year ?
Well, there's been a lot of different twitters. One said:
Considering my retirement. its been an amazing career but I think its time 2 look at different avenues where I can excel! #any1looking4coach?
which might read only as 'considering'. Various other ones seem to confirm it. But there's no actual date or saying it's as of today.
The latest I saw said:
time is up but il play until I'm happy with the right job offer that comes in... And whilst il get my licensing
which implies that he'll carry on playing until he gets a good offer and he gets his coaching licence. So he may well be playing at Felixstowe. (Of course, he'll probably do really well now . . . )
There's an interview with Adrian Mannarino' trainer on the French federation site where he says that of course he's surprised that Adrian has gone so far in the draw (last 16, having gone out in the first round of the qualies last year) because only two weeks ago the team all came over expecting to play the qualies again.
But, he adds 'smilingly', the LTA ended up not giving out all their wild cards, which took them by surprise, and so Adrian just made it into the main draw.
