One thing that helps Wimbledon to still do it properly is that 4-5 hour matches on grass are a lot less common than they are on hard or clay these days.

Although in most things I find myself in agreement with Indy, I have to disagree here. You might as well just toss a coin. What an anticlimax to a close match. And what an advantage it gives to a big server!
Hi, Montana Doug. Quite a lot of discussion about this earlier on the thread ... probably a bit too much to recap here, but you can read the sequence of events (and the various opinions about positions taken) there.
An interesting article, to which ZooTennis referred, partially about Denis Kudla and the way he's qualifying quite frequently, having lacked WCs (have to admit that was the one that surprised me - I thought he was a very good candidate after Queens and given how close to a DA he was in rankings). Sounds like a player with a very good attitude. http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/19/four-american-men-advance-to-main-draw-through-wimbledon-qualifying/

I am way late on this....been a crazy Summer and I have been behind with kids and work.....but I just realized Dan Evans was not given a Wild Card to Wimbledon and think that decision is flat out stupid. Were they paying attention during the recent Davies Cup Match? During Queens? With a little leg up maybe he could crack the top 100 with his talent!
Nicolas Mahut, who received a wild card for Wimbledon has just won his first ever title at the ATP 250 event in s-Hertogenbosch, after having had to come through qualifying. That will see his ranking go from 240 to around 125

he couldn't win a match in qualifying so why should he get MD WC?

That's a good story - first title at 31, and recently the MD final at Roland Garros too. Good for Nicolas.
Nice to think that sometimes sticking at it can bring rewards, even quite late on. There's still hope.

Data I post, opinions I offer, 'facts' I assert, are almost certainly all stupidly wrong.

Without touching on whether or not Evans should have had a MDWC I don't see the logic in saying that his loss in qualifying proves that he shouldn't have received one. Any of the players who did get a MDWC might also have lost in the first round of qualifying. James Ward might easily have lost in qualifying, was it wrong that he got a MDWC? Matthew Ebden received a MDWC (for winning the first Nottingham challenger) yet in the second Nottingham challenger he lost to a Ruben Bemelmans, a player who subsequently failed to come through Wimbledon qualifying. Was it wrong that he got a MDWC? Whether or not someone should get a MDWC should be based on far more than just one match.
It also pretty much irrelevant what round someone goes out in qualifying. Unless a player is seeded their first round in qualifying can be the toughest match that they could play. While that wasn't quite the case with Evans his first round was certainly far tougher than his second round would have been.
Was there and saw Baker get beat after 4-2 lead in third. Jamie played some good winners down the line but the inevitable happened. He has not got big weapons had I think only once ace in match. Run Igor close but the Russian had loads of deft touches at the net. I think Jamie played well but just not good enough at this level

Yes, really chuffed for Mahut - always nice to see a different style of tennis.
And with Lopez winning his first grass title today (and only his third title ever), at the age of nearly 32, the 'old guys' are doing well !!!
NB When Marc Giquel (age 36!) was playing his third round quali match, there was a quite raucous contingent of French women players standing by the court during the fourth set shouting:
