RE: Week 24 - ATP 250 - London Queen's Club, UK (grass)

I was at Queens today and saw Kyle's match. I'm not really an expert, so can't really provide an in-depth analysis! However, I would say that the main area where he fell short was weight of shot - Zemlja just had much more, but I guess as Kyle develops and gets stronger, that will come. He did play some great rallies and was by no means blown off the court. He had plenty of support too!

Also, it did seem to me that there was a camera rigged up for court 1 - whether it was used today, or is there for future use, I don't know.

I seem to remember somewhere in the mists of time , hearing that buildings at, or around, Queens are listed, or otherwise protected and can't be easily fitted out further than they are already for broadcast. Also that the agreement with the local council involves not obscuring further certain views with additional broadcast towers and antennae - a bit like the situation at SW19 with the noise abatement limitation.
That might have something to do with the otherwise 'surprising' situation regarding the provision of coverage.

One wonders which Nieminen will turn up to today's match: the Nieminen who lost to Peter Gojowczyk in a Challenger a few weeks ago, or the Nieminen who so far this year has victories over Tommy Haas, Victor Troicki, Milos Raonic, Juan Martin del Potro, Martin Klizan, Davydenko, Benneteau etc. It would be nice to see Mr Evans' new determination rewarded, and the GB supporter in me would certainly hope for the former, but I have also to admit that the resurgent Finn has always impressed as a thoroughly decent person and is one of the players I most like to see win ....

PS A 'very interesting' interview with Dan Evans - don't you just love it when the littl'uns grow up a bit . . .

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-2338962/Queens-Club-2013-Dan-Evans-reaches-second-round.html

I rarely read much into Dan's interviews as he always talks about lofty ambitions but has frequently failed to back up his fine words. That isn't to say I think there is any lack of sincerity in what he says. One of his charms is that contrary to his "bad boy" image he has a significant touch of naivety about him. He is always honest about his own shortcomings and when he says the right things I don't doubt that he really does means it. He wants to knuckle down, he wants to make the most of his career, but thus far the distractions and temptations have always proved too much for him.

That being said, his live interview on Eurosport after beating Pella really did strike me as quite significant. He said, and I paraphrase, "When I finish playing tennis I want to look back and be able to say that from the age of 23 I did everything I could to make myself the best player I could be". There was just something about the way he said it, it didn't seem like a hollow boast, there really did seem to be some real determination behind the words. Maybe it will again prove to be just words, maybe the new and improved Dan is temporary, but at the moment he really is giving off a great vibe and so while I have some caution I really do feel like this time may be different and that he has finally "got it" and really, really wants to make the most of his ability.

Finally if we really want to speculate without any evidence we can talk about where this change occurred. Obviously at the end of last year Dan lost most of his funding and then he started this year badly with a run of QF,QF, R2 in 10K futures on home soil. He went on holiday in February and didn't bother entering any tournaments immediately after that it, On his return however he entered qualifying for a couple of futures and went on a run of W, RUP, SF. This put him in contention for a Davis cup slot and we all know what happened. Well paid journalists will no doubt point to the Davis Cup as the turning point but having seen him play at Bath I though his attitude there was fantastic so I think the change occurred before. I suspect that his Februray holiday contained a fair bit of sole searching.

Oh, I don't know. I thought it had a certain charm. It conjured up for me visions of a solitary ("sole") soul walking in silence and pondering the past and things to come ... or perhaps a holiday in a fishing village, where one saw a lonely sole flopping in a net and searchingly wondered how best to make use of one's own brief span ...

If you're going to make the odd error (and you make fewer than most of us!) at least let it be one that can provide merriment!

Really upset that this wasn't on centre, although I assume if he comes through today then his match vs Malisse would be?
