Was Inverdale strictly and technically wrong? Yes, though most will have understood that he was talking about singles. And, yes, he should not have said it without qualification. Is it an insult? Well, anything is an insult if you find it insulting, and that's very easy to do; but no, not really, and certainly not said or meant as an insult with any direct disrespect aimed directly at the doubles players by Inverdale.
Nice post by Blob (though one small matter of disagreement ... I do think people accept foreign commentators, if they're good and well-known, such as McEnroe at Wimbledon)
I don't really watch TV or listen to radio that much, but one person I can't recall seeing appear much is Louis Cayer. Have no idea what he's like on media, but I'd be fascinated to hear his perspectives on matches. Ditto people like Julien Hoferlin. Do they ever show up?
I regularly write to the BBC website to complain about lack of coverage of doubles. The frequency of writing betrays the lack of efficacy. But perhaps if more could join in? Do think that with such good doubles players, we really ought to try to get more coverage. Particularly with Mr Murray out of the picture!
Personally I have no objection whatever to ex players doing commentaries. they give a lot of insight that the "professional" commentators don't have.
Secondly I'm not aware that Mcenroe or Becker doing wimbledon or any other GS commentaries is a problem for anyone in this country, they've a lot of respect as former winners and a ton of insight into the game.
Unfortunately for us tennis fans, the people that decide what gets more or less air time are motivated by general demand & the average viewer is much more likely to be interested in watching djokovic's 2nd round match rather than doms first round doubles... i doubt very many of them could even tell you who he is. In fact I know people who love playing tennis in the park on their weekends but couldn't tell you who Berdych is, let alone our doubles specialists. It's a shame there isn't a red button, court selection option for every court at every tournament... but it wouldn't be a very good investment from their perspective.
i agree john inverdale's comments on Peers being American are just plain stupid, but I think we all knew what he meant by his comment after Heather's match. I don't particularly enjoy his coverage but I also can't think of any good replacements, and he certainly doesn't ruin the programme for me. Going against the grain here, I think he IS passionate about tennis, and he certainly understands it... but his job is to present to the general public and whilst I (we) would prefer something a bit more insightful, he does his job pretty well.
Ms Dementieva shows great forbearance. She might have been excused for pulling a few Angelina "Jolie"-sque moves at that point! (Sorry. Couldn't resist)

I agree in principle. Unfortunately too many of them feel the need to talk constantly during matches, failing to understand that when we are watching a match on TV we can actually see what is going on. Ideally you should have a professional commentator teamed up with an expert analyst.
