RE: Week 22 - Spain F15 ($10,000) - Madrid (Clay)

Becker taken to deuce but deservedly wins the first set 6-3, Oli only winning 6 points in 5 return games and Becker winning the points 35-24.

Becker wins 6-3 6-1, and won just 1 point against serve in the 2nd set. Outplayed today it seems.

Just seen a tweet, oli was really sick and could barely move, seems like a fairly good fight atleast considering

The person tweeting that is pretty sympathetic towards Oli so I would take the "could barely move" with a pinch of salt.

Yes, probably an exaggeration, but seems like Oli wasn't anywhere near 100%. Still, 4 Spaniards beaten on Spanish clay, it hasn't been a bad week for him.

Much as I may not be Oli's no. 1 fan, he obviously was a bit sick (or even very sick) and you can't play your best final like that.

So well done to him for a good week, a good showing, and onwards and upwards . . .

Better week from Oli, which is great to see! I'm sure he was poorly, which must catch up with you eventually. We should wait for a tweet directly from him to judge how much of a problem his illness was.

Pity. Clearly impossible really to be judgemental on Oli's last two matches.

Earlier on, some decent signs, but I still think has work to do to build up more consistency.

For future reference to anybody who cares about such things, Pol Toledo, as his Christian name would indicate, is Catalan, so if you insist on using the metro-/matronymic (I generally follow the practice of TeniSpain & use it only if the patronymic is so common that the mother's surname is needed to distinguish one player with the same patronymic from another), his full name is Pol Toledo Bagué.  Check his Twitter account (which I did on-line, as I, like Spectator, do not "follow" anyone!), if you don't believe me. wink

Those Catalan names don't usually catch me out, but that one did (mainly because I didn't realise it was Catalan!)

I don't suppose it will be of any consolation, but, for all "Pol" is a dead giveaway as a Christian name for a Catalan (it means "peace"), I checked because I was expecting the metronymic to be "Bagüe", which would have indicated that the "u" was meant to be pronounced separately - as in "Argüello"), & was taken aback to find that it was actually spelt "Bagué"!  wink

Thanks for that, SC. Catalan something of a mystery here ... good to get an introduction of sorts.

Well done, Mr Golding, too, for playing despite not being well and for his gracious tweet. And for good results this week.
