Really didn't see Sam's result coming.

Mel & Sam into a TB in a set where they created more BP's & won more points, hopefully will stand them in good stead in the breaker.
6-6

Mel & Sam were up 5-2*, served for it once, were broken, then had a MP on their opponents serve in the last game, but now it's back to all square
7-6(5) *5-5

I think for Sam there could be logistical considerations too.
Making the doubles final in Johannesburg delayed her departure until probably late Saturday.
14½ hour flight from Jo'burg to Jakarta (with connections)
3½ hour flight Jakarta to Balikpapan
With waiting times additional travel, customs etc, she probably didn't reach the venue until late Sunday.
Given the direction of travel - east to west - she probably lost most, or all of Monday with jet lag, and so started training in earnest on Tuesday.
As her match was early Wednesday, it might follow as some explanation as to why she won the first set, and faded from there.

Edit: ammended Jo'burg to Jakarta flight time from 10.5 hours - I had read the initial connection only.

Really disappointed that both Sam or Lisa fell at the first hurdle. I was hoping they had turned a corner, but they both still seem very inconsistent.

I'm disappointed too but, to be fair, both of their opponents had career highs around 250-300, so if those opponents are inconsistent but were having 'on' days (Lisa said her opponent simply wasn't missing) results like this can happen without the Brits concerned necessarily playing terribly.

Mel: "Had a shocker in singles today and then went on and played great in doubles! Tennis is a strange game...."

Sadly, that combination is a bit of a British disease above 10K level ...

However, probably not unrelated to her playing the top seed in singles yet (with Sam) being the 2nd seeds in doubles.

Naomi it is then that comes through with a powerful comeback to make her first doubles final at $25K or above since she was a runner up in Saint-Gaudens $50K+H exactly one year ago.

SF: Naomi BROADY/Teodora MIRCIC (GBR/SRB) defeated Samantha MURRAY/Melanie SOUTH [2] 3-6 6-3 [10-4]

F: Naomi BROADY/Teodora MIRCIC (GBR/SRB) vs. Yi CHEN/Yi-Fan XU (TPE/CHN)

Edit: Insert final details, now decided
