Good scrapping from Dan Evans in a match he wins easily if playing well, but might have lost if on "walkabout". Really want him to win this tournament from here, not really for points, more for confidence that he can beat players he "should" be beating on any surface (let's be honest, on talent alone a tournament like this should be a pushover for him) - and then want him to just practice like mad on grass for a couple of weeks.
Another average loss for Dan Smethurst - he wins his fair share of matches you think might go against him, but loses his fair share of matches you think he should win, or at least be more competitive in. I just can't see him showing any signs of real consistency or moving that next step up in standard to CH level.
From what i've seen, Dan Smethurst is probably at the correct ranking and i cannot see him jumping up to the next level. Expect him to be a bit more effective on grass with his big serve.
The plus point for Dan Evans this week is to pick up the max points to push him closer to 300 ranking and ensure he can make main draws in regular challengers. I see no reason why he should win this tournament.
Yes - it wasn't until I put this week's tournaments on my best 18 list last night that it fully dawned on me that this week is the only counter he's got from outside the UK and Ireland!
As Coup Droit says, it's still not too late if he really wants it enough.

Definitely not too late- he just needs a bit of a kick up the backside! I think he does want it... he's probably just coming to terms with what that means to his lifestyle and finding it tough trying to adapt! I'm not against players letting loose and having a good time, they just have to be responsible enough to do it at the right time and make the necessary sacrifices during tournaments. He's proved that he can live with the guys in the top 100 but he hasn't knuckled down and cemented his place there himself YET... it's not too late its just a mystery to everyone, including himself, if he has what it takes to actually do it.
It is a pity that Evo so clearly hasn't so far fulfilled his potential, and I must admit to indicating in the past little sympathy and annoyance about this.
I think Coup Droit is right in that he probably knows more than anyone how counterproductive much of his behavior is ( hopefully less so ) / has been.
But sometimes us humans do have great difficulty changing behaviors, of varying compulsive degrees ) that we know ourselves to be wrong. I think it is best to work with such people to reinforce these messages, rather than just come down over harshly with a lack of empathy, as has been arguably the case with the LTA's relations wih some players in the past. It is good to hear that Leon has been discussing Evo's scheduling with him, and hopefully other matters.
There may come a tipping point of course, but in general it is best to work together to try and solve such issues.
Dan Evans is one of my favourite players to watch he should really be the British Number 2 behind Andy. On talent alone he is right up there. He needs someone like Greg Rusedeski who works with some of the younger guys to take him under his wing. His attitude remains his biggest downfall if he wants to succeeed then he has to work for it. He is now getting older and no longer the " new kid on the block" competing in british futures all the time with his mates is not the answer so going abroad for this tournament is the correct decision
