So, when was the last time a GB woman last beat a former world #1? I think we're back to Jo Durie again?

No we're back to Laura Robson last year at the US Open

I would put this in 96pt font to represent the true & startling nature of my stupidity, but will spare everyone that eyesore, and merely say: doh! no

Of course! How soon my tiny mind forgets. disbelief

So my prediction is - Laura to win against an under-prepared and distracted Venus who is more interested in Brand Williams than winning tennis matches.

I rest my case.

Well for the first part about being under-prepared anyway.  Reading my comment back I have perhaps been a bit harsh in the second part because from what I saw with Venus and her dealings with the public, she was - to use Coup Droit's phrase - a very classy lady indeed.

Well played Laura.  Great win.

The conditions were tricky with swirling wind and clouds of dust and Laura usually struggles under those circumstances but seemed to cope well today. If anything Venus seemed more put off by the wind and dust, despite Laura having to call for the trainer to bring something to clear the dust from one of her eyes. I thought that was a very determined, very controlled and very professional performance from Laura. She is clearly going through a purple patch, well done, long may it last. biggrin.gif

At least Laura managed to live up to her cheeky forecast of five years ago. Now to see if she what she can do against "little" sister. Can she do what Sharapova has just failed to do?

Well done to Laura.

The rankings though again aren't really behaving. I'd expected her "in running" ranking, once this week's points from last year were taken off, to have risen a bit. But with none of the players ranked 31 to 38 having won a main draw round at Rome last year ( or significant points elsewhere ), she was still at provisional 39.

That R1 win vs Venus in itself takes her up to provisional 33, but she could very well be repassed by quite a few players.

Just have to beat Serena !

I see that Lisicki and Peng for starters ( from these that were in Laura's ranking sights ) have won their R1 matches.

Another very big scalp for Laura, played well enough to get the win comfortably against a badly wounded opponent.

Bob was spot on, earlier tweets from reporters on site who had watched Venus practice today sounded pretty grim and suggested that she was going to be severely handicapped.

The betting market was all for Laura at decent prices.

Yes her ranking isn't going to rise much as the likes of Lisicki and Kuznetsova are playing well and winning matches, but what it does do is increase her chances of being seeded at Wimby which would be nice, a 1st round win at RG maybe enough.

The match against Serena is impossible to predict, but to have any chance of being competitive against her you need to have weapons, as Serena's matches against the likes of Errani, Wozniacki and Radwanska are usually very one sided. It just depends which Serena turns up, the GOAT or probably more likely a solid version the one which will probably allow Laura to pick up 5 or so games, maybe more if Laura plays her best.

As befits her opponents staure, Laura is feature match tomorrow, last up on Centrale.
Not before 20:00 UK.

Robmond don't play tomorrow.
