Maybe Anne just got off to a poor start and then won pretty easy from then on in. . .
Some players find team tennis quite intimidating - there's a often a huge amount of noise from the partisan crowds who can be quite rowdy. And a lot of pressure to win. Anne's an experienced hand, I expect she's used to it, but it can still be quite a shock sometimes if you've only been playing ITF or lower WTA matches with a handful of well-behaved spectators

interesting re French tournys. also hear Anne Keothavong is playing German league. Any contacts/ideas on thise two angles?
I don't know about Anne in Germany but I know that she's a member of TC Boulogne Billancourt in France and that she played three interclub league matches for them (the 'premier division' of French tennis plays in November/December time but the tennis year runs end-October to end-October so it's in the 2013 year).
She won two and lost one, losing to Mathilde Johansson, currently WR97 so no shame there! (French interclub league tennis is of a very high level). From what I can tell, Anne has played for them for the last three years.
Lisa Whybourn and Naomi Broady also joined the system this year, both playing for Stade Clermontois. Lisa had three wins and one loss, Naomi had 1 win and four losses.
It'll be a nice earner for them. When Fitzy hot-footed it back to Germany to play his league match before doing an about turn to get back to Newcastle, I bet he earned far more from his German match than he did in Newcastle, or even would have done if he'd made the final!!! (another indictment on pay levels in the ITF tournaments).
its a shame that the aegon team tennis system in the UK isn't run on the same scale as German/French league. We would have so many more players able to play for longer and it would help to promote the sport in this country. unfortunately, i don't believe it is a priority for the lta and our club system doesn't really support it. bit of chicken and egg with more money needed to attract the players but more high profile players needed to attract spectators etc to generate the money. having said that- Anne, Lisa, Anna Smith, Sam M have all been playing or down to play this season.

Anne is playing for M2 Beauté Ratingen in the top division of the Bundesliga. She beat Dominice Ripoll 3-6 6-1 10:5 at the weekend, closer than you might expect against an unranked player with a career high of 357 in 2008, but then again I don't know how seriously the players take it.
