L32: Sabrina Bamburac WR 831 lost to (7) Tori Kinard (USA) WR 635 by 0 & 2
Deep sigh. Not the result, but the scoreline once again. I suppose we should commend her persistence, but what do coaches say to their charges when this sort of thing is happening repeatedly for months on end? What can you say?
It's a very long time since she won a set never mind a match. Her points are going to drop off soon, so she won't even make main draw when this happens
Perhaps they point to the likes of Agnes Szavay, Anastasija Sevastova or Rebecca Marino, amongst other, all now sadly retired for illness, injury or a combination of both, without getting to fulfil their potential, and suggest that whilst you still can, play if you want to. The chance is a privilege and can disappear all to suddenly and unjustly.
Sticking at it through the hard times allows the human interest to shine through in stories like Alisa Kleybanova's return and victory this week. Whilst poor form is in no respect of the same gravity as that case, the humanity of the effort against the odds is, no matter what form (word play intended) they may take .
Despite the increasingly frequent attempts here to reduce tennis to a purely financial exercise, ruthlessly exterminating honest effort if there is no measurable glory of sufficient weight to be found at the end of things, I will continue to cherish the small victories and wouldn't begrudge anyone their chance to achieve their own.

I think a lot of us cherish the small victories and respect players trying to fulfil their potential, blob, otherwise we probably wouldn't be on this forum in the first place.

well done to katy- and certainly a winnable match in the next round
got to feel a bit sorry for sabrina- great work ethic, solid technique, strong athlete... her current form must be something mental and (coincidentally?) started when she moved to the NTC. not sure exactly what it is about the atmosphere but a lot of the players, especially girls, seem to dislike it there.
she clearly loves playing tennis and is an extremely nice girl... i do wish she had gone to the states or something other than playing full time, but i wish her the best of luck and hopefully things turn around quickly.
