Well, why's his page the only one that comes up automatically on the doubles thingy whereas everyone else comes up on the singles thingy ?

The profile page for doubles specialists always defaults to their doubles rank, stats, etc. Obviously at lower level it is debatable as to who is a doubles specialist.

The way they do that is very confusing. I don't think it's simply a case of them showing the higher of the two rankings first either (though that would be even sillier, given that 200 in the singles rankings is a lot bigger achievement than 199 in the doubles rankings, for example), the doubles ranking must have to be better than half the singles ranking or something like that.

I imagine the total time wasted by people due to the confusion caused exceeds the time people would otherwise spend clicking the D by some distance!

More to the point, I don't understand why they don't show both sets of info at the same time, especially given how small the rankings info boxes on the player profile tabs are!

On the subject of potential GB switchers, Nick Lester on twitter has highlighted that world no.88 Aljaz Bedene has turned out for Hertfordshire in the county cup. He's playing Smethurst in singles then later on teaming with Coupland for doubles.

Probably nothing more than a bit of off-season match practice, but maybe something to keep an eye on nonetheless.

On a side note, I hadn't remembered that the "Hertfordshireman" with the Slovenian name was associated with Gosling (have edited, as it appears he's not actually a Gosling person) ... so his coach appears to be John Morris ... who is also based in Hertfordshire? But that only seems to be since 2012 ...

I believe that he read about Bob's "challenge" and decided that he could help him out.

But yes, this is very interesting. Do you need to be a British citizen/a long term resident to play in the county cup?

Given the number of Brits that cross the channel to play in French and German leagues, I wouldn't read too much into this.

I wasn't aware that Bedene has spent so much time at Gosling!

But the French and German leagues are a different set-up I believe which welcomes international players.  I would have thought the British equivalent would be the Aegon Team Tennis for which A1 has been recruiting players for his team.

I was under the impression that for County Cup players had to been registered with their local association, and was more for local pride and bragging rights rather than any financial incentive which the Team Tennis (previously named NCL?) would provide.  For example I doubt Marcus Daniel would be eligible to turn out for Somerset, despite being based, and presumably living, in Bath.  Similarly Donna Vekic. However I believe Rosenzweig has played for one of the Scottish areas in the past, despite representing France in ITF tournaments so who knows what the rules are...

Here is the relevant rule: (from http://www.lta.org.uk/players-parents/Competition/AEGON-County-Cup/County-Eligibilty-Rules/)

"35.2         A player is qualified to represent an area in a match or to play in an area competition if:

(A)         he is a British Citizen in accordance with the British Nationality Act 1981 (as amended from time to time);

or (B)         he is qualified to represent Great Britain under the appropriate ITF Rule;

or (C)         Great Britain has been his permanent place of residence for a period of 24 consecutive months (12 months in the case of Juniors) immediately preceding the relevant match or competition;

and (i)           his place of birth or permanent residence at date of birth is in such area;

or (ii)          his place of permanent residence has for at least one year immediately preceding the match or competition (six months in the case of Juniors) been in such area;

or (iii)         at any time his place of permanent residence has for a period of five consecutive years been in such area;

or (iv)         he is serving full-time in the British Regular Armed Forces and he has resided in such area for at least six months immediately preceding the match or competition; or he/she is the spouse or child of such a person and he/she has so resided with his/her spouse or parent. "

... so he must qualify under (C) and (ii)

I see that all the GB lads are getting EXTREMELY hot under the collar about Bedene playing for Herts.

I don't get it.

The rules are clearly laid out. If he qualifies, and wants to play, then surely that's a reflection on the worth of County Cup ? It values it.

If the GB lads feel so strongly about CC, why aren't they here playing it ?

I see that Mariam Bolkvadze is also playing (the youngster from Georgia).

But nobody seems to care about that.

So is it, in fact, that it's fine to have 'foreigners' playing but only if they're not too good ? (with apologies to Mariam who actually posted a very good win).

Heh, just deal with it, boys. If anything, the players with pro aspirations should be champing at the bit that they are getting this unexpected opportunity to play a regular Tour guy.

Didn't know where to put this (and not 100% sure that it hasn't been posted before) but a recent interview with Brydan, if someone's interested:

My impression is he has been pretty honest about areas he needs to work on to make himself successful and from the interview it sounds as if he is creating as stable an environment around himself as possible. I am hopeful increasing maturity will bring him success and a place in the top 100.

When I saw this had been bumped I was half-expecting to see he'd switched his allegiance back.
