Week 19 - ITF $50K+H - Johannesburg, South Africa - Hard

The two highest-ranked Brits here meet in R1 (and are in top seed Babos's quarter), which is a pity, but given Jade's draw and the points on offer, we can't have too many complaints overall:

L32: (7) Samantha Murray WR 254 v Emily Webley-Smith WR 436 (H2H 1-1 but both way back in 2006, 1 a ret.)
L32: Jade Windley WR 444 v (Q) Ani Vangelova (BUL) WR 1079

Hoping Jade can take advantage of the draw.

Have to say i'd think Sam would come through but who knows

For a 50K+H i'm suprised at the number of withdrawals and the weak qualifying entry. I know it's clay court season, but a great chance for Jade and probably Sam to pick up pints and move up the rankings.

I'd prefer their chances picking up electrolyte-filled sports drinks

Sam was 2-1 up and then someone took an injury break. They came back and Sam won the first set 6-1, it's no longer on the scoreboard so I'm guessing Sam won by retirement.

I am sure there would have been a much better entry if there had been back to back South African tournaments. But it is a heck of a trek for this one tournament and possibly just one match, especially if you get a bad draw.

A foot injury according to the tournament's Twitter account. Poor Emily

I'm surprised to see how far Babos' ranking has fallen from a CH of 59 last year. Looking at her profile, she is carrying 6 first round exits at grand slams and premier mandatory's which must be depressing her ranking quite a bit.

The first 5 games in Jade's match were all breaks and Jade won 7 games in a row from 2-2* in the 1st set to go a set and double break up.

Vangelova then started holding serve (at the 7th attempt, she has now won 3/11 service games) and won 4 games in a row to leave Jade *3-4 down.

Jade then held and broke to leave herself serving for the match but got broken back and Vangelova then held to leave Jade serving to stay in the set.

Vangelova then got to 15-40 on Jade's serve (may have been 0-40, I didn't notice) but Jade saved the set points and they are into a tiebreak. 6-2 6-6

There are 12 points at stake here, as many as for winning a 10K title.
