A good days tennis played in very unusual weather for us up here in the NE. Fitzy had chances to win his match and considering his schedule over the last few days and the fact he is carrying a slight injury put up a mighty fine effort. His opponent was a complete nark, complaining about every close line call and on countless occasions disrupting the flow of the match. On one occasion Michon stopped because someone was trying to get to his seat, but Fitzy put him straight by stating the fact that this was not Wimbledon and he shouldn't have to stop everytime there's a slight movement off court. Ash was very impressive and wow what an improvement from the last time I saw him 12 months ago. Hits the ball with such authority now and looks to me as if the top 500 is only months away. Newbie Cameron has quite a wiry build and a big top spin lefty forehand, and looks to have potential for the future. Evo was just evo, brilliant when his mind is focussed as it was today. Don't know what happened to Coxy in the first set, but he played alot better in the second. His opponent though has been 20 in the junior ranks and so is very useful. Richard and Kubler were in the middle of a very tight match when I left with the Aussie just starting to get the upper hand.
Interested spectators included Dicko of the Daily Mail and Leon Smith.
Definitely a good day for Evo today - not just an 0 & 2 win but his R2 opponent was a set down in his R1 match when his opponent retired!
This was Van Der Duim's first match since retiring at 0-1 against Marsalek in Qatar at the start of April. Of course Evo has alreday beat him three times already this year.
Fantastic win for Jonny O'Mara beating Alex Ward 4-6, 6-2, 6-0
At 4-4* in the first Jonny had 0-40 but didn't take his chances and was then broken to lose the set. Ward held at the start of the second and Jonny had to endure a monster game and save at least 3 break points before eventually holding but from there he seemingly ran away with the match, winning 11 of the last 12 games.
Jonny was always going to get a few wins highly rated so not a major shock against a mid ranker like ward, although the manner of the win was. Omara and Hoyt to push on this year would be good.
