Ag Rad beat Pironkova 6-2 6-4. Can't imagine Laura winning many of the longer rallies so she'll have to land a lot of early aggressive shots, especially heavy returns; not much margin for error given Radwanska's superb movement.

The good news is that Laura's natural game plan matches this strategy perfectly. I can't imagine Laura being too upset if Krajan tells her that she has to go for loads of winners.
Not expecting Laura to win, but I wouldn't be surprised if she dominates a period of the match. Just sustaining a high enough level for two sets is probably too much to ask.
Typical WTA playing second fiddle to the ATP unfortunately.
The second biggest court goes: 1 womens match (with a Spanish woman in) rest all ATP matches. Fair distribution there I dont think!
Agreed - So Laura's match v the world No. 4 is on Court 3 with the second court having 4 mens matches with a total of zero top 10 players. A 3-2 split would be fair enough but not 4-1.
Strangely, Lepchenko v Vicnci on Court 3 is now being streamed so a possibility if not a probability of Laura being streamed tomorrow. I don't think earlier court 3 matches were streamed so I'm not sure what the reasoning behind this one being streamed is.
Blimey, did anyone follow the live score? What happened????
Dominated the early proceedings were 4-1 up with a single break, but were pegged back slowly, Lisa only held serve once in the match. Their opponents took all their chances before taking the second set much more comfortably albeit with winning all the deuce points.
I see court 3 is a stadium court so we will have a live stream afterall, good stuff. My prediction is a 3 and 3 victory for a Agadoo, but she isn't playing at her best so a shock victory isn't completely out of the question.
Yeah brilliant news about the streaming. Shame I found out after my rant!
I followed the doubles live score - so much closer than the score suggested. In the second set, at 3-1, there was a deciding point on their opponents serve and then in the next game on their own serve. Indeed the second set had 3 or 4 (I think) deuces that went against Laura, so closer than score suggests.

I think Blob's picture on page 3 of this thread gives us a clue ...
Day 1 of a tournament with no big names and very few Spaniards is not a sensible measure of the tournament. Of course, I realise ATP is more popular on the whole, particularly somewhere like Madrid where 2 of the top 5 male players are Spanish.
That said,it is embarassing for the WTA that with Lauras star power and reputation vs #4 and reigning Wimbledon finalist, the tournament puts them on court 3 before the ATP top 10 even get involved.
It's probably fair to say that Laura v Aga would be a bigger/more popular match in other parts of the world and on a different surface than on a Madrid clay court.
Also, despite being an established top ranked play and IMO one of the best players to watch, Aga isn't someone who is a big crowd puller (because of this I have been able to watch her away from the main courts at Wimbledon in each of the past two years).
I did notice during the Australian Open that the tournament was excellent both for women's matches getting a good share of the main courts plus having a good share of the crowd attendance/interest - most noticeably for Laura's match against Sloane Stephens where fans reportedly 'sat through' a men's match to be able to watch it.
I'm not really understanding the disgruntlement here, it's perfectly reasonable for Laura to not be a big crowd puller in Spain (yet). Sure Aga is a big name but it's worth noting that there are 3 WTA matches on Centre and 2 WTA on court 1 so the scheduling seems fine to me.
Good luck Laura! I'm thinking she will take at least a set of Aga!
