True, though Mlle Pain is French, I was thinking it was quite appropriate that Jess fed her a breadstick ...

More seriously, the first of Jess's current 3 ranking points came from this tournament last year, so she needs to win this match to stay on the ranking list.

Well played Maia Lumsden!!!!

biggrin

And not a bad day for the youngsters at all. Nice!

Hope we will see 1 or 2 more of your peers in round 2 before the day is over.

Yes. with Harriet Dart dropping out the rankings on Monday, if Jess went the following Monday, I make it that GB would be down to 26 ranked women with more in danger over the coming few months.

Looking good for Jess though and various WCs and q1 wins in bigger events usually adds quite a lot of points in the grass court season.

It would be a bit of a commentary if Steven couldn't fill the GB women top 25 table !

Well done Jess, the 27 are maintained for now.

Cracking looking win for Maia !

Maia looked impressive, although her opponent was limited. Maia v Katie tomorrow I think.

Maia and Katie are in the same quarter but both have to get past seeds tomorrow if they want to play each other.

4 wins so far ... and Anna Smith has taken the 1st set against top seed Anett Kontaveit 8-6 in the tiebreak

Come on Anna, that would be a good win.

R1 certainly gone fairly well overall already.

Excellent day on the women's side. Last 2 results in particular.

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!

Good luck to Fran for a final hurrah

Wow (at Anna's win), that really is something, even if she does have the higher career high of the two!

I doubt (m)any of us expected 5 Brits in R2 after yesterday & given the draw ... and despite no Brits being seeded here, there will be at least one in the QFs because Anne plays Danielle (who also beat a higher-ranked opponent) in R2.

I think it may be fair to say Fran currently spoiling today's "party".

0-6 first set, with a run of 13 points lost in a row.....

I'm guessing this might not go all that well!
