Also a big jump in the rankings should get back to 550 with these points.
Fitzy has rightly said that he is only interested in his ranking at the end of the year. He had a strong first half to last year but didn't pick up many points in the second half of the season, where his well documented problems off the court (financial and otherwise) made it a very tough time for him.
So it was always going to be difficult for him to maintain his ranking at the start of the year, particularly given his circumstances. Whilst others were training hard during pre-season, Fitzy was working in London, trying to earn enough cash to support this season's campaign. So basically he came in "cold" at the start of the year. Add to that the misfortune of drawing seeded players in R1 for 7 consecutive tournaments and it was always going to be difficult.
For me, the turning point has been 3 weeks in Vietnam accompanied by a coach - Dan Kiernan of Soto tennis - which in my opinion has acted as Fitzy's "pre-season". I have always believed that he would be much stronger in the second half of the year than the first.
I am delighted to see that the 2nd half of the season has kicked off early.
Many congrats Fitzy. Champion of Edinburgh. You earned it buddy.
Huge congrats to Fitzy (who should know bounce back up towards the top 550) on his 2nd Futures singles title
In a week of absolutely bonker comebacks from Brits, this one has to take the biscuit, even if in the end it wasn't the most nerve-shredding. To lose 10 of the first 11 games and then win 12 of the next 13 to take the title ... wow!
I don't know whether something happened to Folie (who has now been upset by lower-ranked Brits in all 4 GB Futures he has played this year - maybe he should be put on permanent invitation ), though if it did, clearly nothing bad enough to stop him playing on.
Whatever happened (and let's not forget that Fitzy knocked out the top seed here this week too), a massive testament to the power of never giving up, both this week and through all the dire draws and tiebreak woes of earlier this year.
