Week 18 - Spain F12 ($10,000) - Balaguer (Clay)

Slabba is a DA here and could be top seed

QR1: (q15) Max Andrews WR 1671 v Jesper Korsbaek Jensen (DEN) UNR

Edit:  sorry, had to correct the spelling of the venue before it drove me to distraction!

Looks like this tournament has been hard hit by the weather - in the singles, they still have most of QR2 and the FQR to go and will not start the main draw until Thursday. Main draw doubles starts tomorrow.

Slabba finally got on court today and won his R1 match:

L32: (1) Alex Slabinsky WR 500 beat (WC) Adriŕ Mas Máscolo (ESP) WR 1502 by 2 & 2

... but then later in the day, he suffered the same fate as the other two Brits who were no. 1 seeds in Futures this week:

L16: (1) Alex Slabinsky WR 500 lost to Andoni Vivanco-Guzman (ESP) WR WR 709 (CH 408 in 2009) by 4 & 4 bleh

By the way, the 7th seed was the only seed who survived the first two rounds here!

****

QF:  Alex Slabinsky & Ferran Ventura WR 3130 "defeated" Nicholas Baez & Thomas Shubert (USA/USA) by (yet another) walkover! disbelief  wink

****

SF:  (1) Juan-Samuel Arauzo & Iván Arenas (ESP/ESP) WR 749 vs Alex Slabinsky & Ferran Ventura WR 3130

I saw Vivanco Guzman beat Jack Carpenter in Elche a couple of years ago.  He is built like the proverbial outhouse and hits the ball very hard.  He was on the way up in the rankings at the time but I think he then had a period out with injury.  Probably a better player than his ranking suggests.

Yes, I had vague memories of AVG doing some damage in the past and was surprised to find his current and career high rankings weren't higher.
