Managed to catch just the final set TB and when he won, he had a smile which was rather Cheshire Cat-like and was shaking his head in disbelief.
I know he had been ranked in the 100s before his very long lay-off with injury, but from the way he came across, his 35 match ITF winning streak and now the very quick transition into being very competitive at ATP level in just 3 or 4 months is clearly beyond his wildest dreams and he cant quite believe what's happening to him. Great to have good news stories like this.
Fantastic draw too against the lowest seed, so he has a decent chance of another big scalp.......the prize in all likelihood would be to play David Ferrer in the L16, almost certainly a massive thrill for him.
PCB has qualified for the MD at Estoril/Oerias or whatever it is called.
In his FQR match, came back from losing set 1, and was a double break down 1-4* final set. Good lad!!
His ranking now up in the 220s, and with a few weeks to go, will be a shoo-in for RG qualies, although with his performances this year, must have an outside chance of a MDWC - it's a great story.
This week's rankings are what count for RG quallies and the list should be out sometime tomorrow. 228 probably won't make the original cut (last year's was 225) but he will certainly get in.
He was a set and a break down when I first looked at the score, then checked for the result and he was 4-2 up final set!!! Got some bottle, as well as excellent fitness and a very good game.
