RE: Week 17 - ITF $25K - Phuket, Thailand - Hard

I have a funny feeling that Naomi will win.

Good news for both girls and should both start to climb the rankings in the next couple of weeks. Lisa must be targetting that top 250.

Good to see Lisa closing in on a Wimbledon WC. Too late for Naomi I suspect QWC will have to do and rightly so.

BTW, the picture after Naomis (that Steven posted) is captioned 'Pretty Aussie Olivia Rogowska in action' - what a strange thing for someone to write.

Whichever Brit progresses must fancy a shot at the final, where I suspect Kumkhum (comfortably top seed) will lie in wait.

210 points are enough for WR 250 at the moment and with her QF points here, Lisa will have 192 points on 6 May, i.e. just 18 points away.

However, from a Wimbledon WC point of view, she will then have 45 more points to come off before the likely cut off date - 35 from Astana (where she reached the Final as a qualifier) and 10 from Nottingham 50K, so she needs 60-70 more points before Wimbledon to be top 250 then.

Naomi took the first set 6-4
She was also *3-1 in the second, but Lisa just got her first break of the match - Naomi was unable to close out when *40-15 up in the game.

Naomi 6-4 3-2*

From 3-1, and a further game point, down in set 2 Lisa has gone on a charge, taking four consecutive games.

Naomi 6-4 *3-5

Lisa closes out the second set

Naomi: 6-4 4-6 *0-0

140 points in the 20 games so far tells yo how close this one has been throughout.

No idea who'll take it now!

Lisa takes it, breaking away right at the end to claim her first victory over Naomi.

QF: WHYBOURN, Lisa (GBR) 7 267 defeated BROADY, Naomi (GBR) 332 4-6 6-4 6-4

102 points to 100 in the end in a serve-dominated match, both saving 4 break points and Lisa taking 3 to Naomi's 2.

This will be Lisa's third 25K singles semi - her first was in Wrexham back in 2010 when she lost to Heather and her second in Astana 11 months ago when she ended up as the runner-up.

Its a shame that these points will not be added until the 6th of May as next weeks Roland Garros Qualifying list comes out next week. Steven do you by any chance know what the cut of has been in recent years, I am guessing unlike Australia its around the 200 - 220 mark.

Yes, you're right - RG qualifying only has a 96-player draw for women and Paris being much less of a trek than Melbourne for most players, the cut doesn't move out drastically in the last few days as it often does at the AO.

Last year, the initial qualifying cut for RG was 200 and it only ended up going out as far as 215 after withdrawals, etc, and 2011 was similar, with an initial cut of 198 going out to 213.

Hence Tara should get in if she wants to play but no Brits ranked below her will.

SF: WHYBOURN, Lisa (GBR) 7 267 v PLIPUECH, Peangtarn (THA) WC 428 (CH 379 last Nov)

They have met once before, in R1 at last year's Wrexham 25K, Plipuech winning 3-6 6-4 6-3.

The biggest compliment I can pay Lisa, is that she displays great mental strength in close matches. I watched a match she played against Tara a few years ago, which went the distance and for me was won through huge grit and desire. I remember this time last year she was winning ridculously long matches and if you have that ability you can really surge up the rankings because 50/50 matches tend to go your way.

SF: Tara MOORE/Melanie SOUTH (GBR/GBR) [4] defeated Misa EGUCHI/Akiko OMAE (JPN/JPN) [2] 6-3 5-7 [10-5]
F: Tara MOORE/Melanie SOUTH (GBR/GBR) [4] vs. Nicha LERTPITAKSINCHAI/Peangtarn PLIPUECH (THA/THA) [1]

Let's hope that we can halt Miss Plipuech's progress in both singles and doubles.
