RE: Wimbledon 2013

BTBB - I wouldn't be surprised if that's why qualy wildcards have been held back. Normally a few are every year.

In the end they will probably go to some of the higher ranked Brits who can't make pre-qualies because they do well in Notts, or the runners-up in the play-offs.

yeah.... it happened to lisa last year- she was told she would have to make the choice between pulling out of nottingham to play pre qualies or risk not getting a QWC... as it happened she chose to play Nottingham and got one last minute anyways, so i guess that may happen again this year... still think its a shame though as I don't feel EWS deserves a QWC ahead of some of the others who will have to play pre qualies, regardless of how well she does this week in nottingham.. jade probably does on the other hand so we shall see!

Personally, Emily was already top of my list for deserving a Wimbledon Q WC of these not having received one. Much more likely to get a result there than Jade, even though Jade is ranked a bit higher.

she seems to be a favourite on this board so i dont want to tread on any toes... i agree she has her best results on grass + has had some good wins in the past, but i think if you could see the girls play and train week in, week out and you took their current standard, you might agree with me that her ranking is slightly inflated even at current...

unfortunately she is only going to drop further and I would far rather give the opportunity to someone who can not only win a match or more in this years draw, but who could learn from the experience and go deeper in years to come. for me, EWS doesn't fall into this category... but that's why i said i thought it's unfortunate that she will miss pre qualies- if she can win herself one through the draw then of course, she has proven she fully deserves it... however i don't want it to be the case that the lta almost have no option but to give her one, simply because one of her best results of the year came on the same day as sign in for pre qualies

Don't bother about stepping on my toes if you disagree LOL.

I just give my honest opinion based on my admittedly more limited knowledge and observation.

Although I do see a case for giving chances to future prospects I do think this needs to be balanced quite a bit by the here and now, and as I still doubt anyone in the play-offs has more chance than Emily, I would be very happy to see her get a Q WC.

and i agree- especially in the main draw, i want the WCs to go to players who can win! we obviously just have a difference of opinion on EWS's standard at present... everyone has their own opinion :)

You may be right about her future potential compared to some of the younger players like Katy Dunne, but the fact is that (like Jade, who is also detained in Nottingham), she is currently ranked higher than anyone in the playoffs, so it wouldn't be just because one of her best results of the year occurred today.

I think those wildcards are spot on.

Oh please give over Paul - I think they just highlight why they should either be scrapped or severely reduced.

I'm also rooting for Ms W-S to get a QWC ... past performance is a factor in that, I'll admit. But it seems less of a risk than many! And for someone who has had as much rotten luck in the past as she has, it would be truly just too much rotten luck to miss out on Wimbledon (or have chances diminished) because of doing well in another tournament.

but i think it WOULD just be because of the result in nottingham because i guarantee you she wouldnt have got one had she lost, she would have been made to play pre qualies... maybe she would win her way through the pre qualies draw but i can see a number of names she wouldn't be favourite against- Mel South (lost to in Notts), Katy Dunne (lost to in pre qualies last year), Anna Smith... and I'd even fancy Harriet Dart and a couple of the other young girls to push her... i would rather the players that get automatic WCs are those with their ranking on the way up, and the older lot should have to prove why they deserve another WC by playing in the pre qualies- as they have done with Mel

As you'll see from my post in the other section, I agree that things should probably focus on those who are moving up. But at the same time, I take the point of those who pointed out that some honour is due people like Ms Keothavong, who have carried GB hopes over the years.

agreed :) i would have definitely put annie k in the main draw, but 200 in the world and stable/slowly dropping is very different to 450 and stable/dropping!!

BTBB - I agree that if she got a QWC, the result in Nottingham would be what tipped the balance. All I meant was that even that probably wouldn't have been enough to tip the balance if she wasn't also still ranked higher than all the players in pre-qualies and had good results on grass in the past. All we differ on is that I hope she does get a QWC and you hope she doesn't.

I accept that you are closer to the coal face (or is that court face?) and may well have more valid/up to date reasons for your opinion than I do.
