Blob. Muguruza is definitely a cry I'm afraid. Exceptional power off the ground, on the up and up (I reckon she'll be Spanish #1 within 18 months), and definitely NOT just a clay courter.

The draws for both GB men and women are beyond shocking!!!!

In the bottom half, Elena has a great draw, Sam has a sporting chance, JoKo and Anne have no chance IMO

In the top half, both Tara and Heather could be blown off the court if their opponents have good days, but their opponents have occasional very bad days.

Whilst Elena took Kirilenko to 3 close sets, I don't see Laura having any chance whatsoever the way she is currently playing......Maria is one of the smartest players out there, and very consistent (oh oh!) and will target Laura's weaknesses. Of course, if Laura has a Li Na/Cljisters day, Maria will be simply swept aside without a whimper....that's the irony!

I agree with you about Muguruza generally, she's very promising - The vastly under rated CSN may have something to say about that #1 spot.
Garbine's having a very good week this week (SF today) in the bizarre clay on grass event in 's-Hertogenbosch.
She doesn't seem, as yet, to put strong weeks together back to back though, and so, with other factors, I feel Anne has some chance.

Wimbledon 2013 - women's WCs & pre-draw discussion

This is in connection to the ongoing thread about the Ks and Eleanor.

Could someone remind me/tell me what the rules are/policy is about awarding Qualie WCs?

I know that there's the play-off competition for a Q place (great idea) and that obviously most places are awarded on ranking (where does this ranking normally go down to?)

But what is the official policy (or pratical policy) about awarding other WCs?

I remember that Josh WH got one in the men's Q draw last year (despite being WR 750 or so).

How many do they give? I guess what I mean is will Katy D get a Q WC place if she's still ranked about where she is ? Can they give others?

TX

PS There was maybe an old Qualies thread that this would have been better on - sorry if I chose the wrong one.

You need to be top 250 to be considered for a main draw wildcard (unless there are extenuating circumstances, although I haven't seen them use those on the women's side before). Those between 250 and 350ish (trying to remember where Mandy was ranked last year when she got her wc) tend to get qualy wildcards (normally only a couple fall into this group), with everyone lower ranked going into pre-qualies. Top pre-qualy seed tends to be someone like Em, ranked around the 400 mark.

So we are probably looking at JoKo (if she doesn't sneak in on her own rank), Heather, Naomi, Sam, Tara (if she finds some form quickly) for main draw, with Jade being put straight into qualies.

Officially only 2 wildcards are awarded from pre-qualies but they almost always end up giving more, usually to the losing semi-finalists (in rare ocassions also to some losing quarter-finalists, normally in ranking order).

Katy gotten QWCs for the past couple of years, and provided she keeps her ranking nudging in the right direction and (if she's not high enough to be given an automatic place) doesn't bomb out in round 1 of pre-qualies, she'll feature I'm sure.

Thanks Paul.

It was the Qualies that I was most interested in.

I'm pretty sure that Josh WH got a Q WC without even playing the pre-qualy competition.

So I was wondering if they'd give Katy one without having to take part? Do they do that?

As I remember I think they give out 8 wc's initially covering both main draw and quallies. So the number of qualifying wc's given out originally depends on how many top 250 players are getting main draw wc's, which always seems bizarre to me as they are completely different events.

They sometimes include young players in the 8 wc's regardless of ranking like Josh WH last year and Liam, Kyle and oli in previous years, it just depends I presume on how many higher ranked people they decide are worthy of being given a wc without the need for the playoff. As PaulM said its hard to see anyone ranked below Jade being a wc to quallies straight off so you would assume there will be 2 quallies wc's given out to some of the younger players before the playoff. Although with quite a few top 250 players needing main draw wc's this year it would seem likely that lots of qualifying wc's will be left over after the playoff anyway.

Hi Everyone :):) wow its that time of year again lol I personally think if Katie D can get her ranking up to about 450 so should be considered for a main draw WC as she is proving she is coming of age winning ITF tournaments and showing real potential also last year Kyle Edmund received a main draw wc and her was lower ranked than the cut off, yes i know he was a junior but i think the LTA should start looking to the youngsters like Katy B and Elenor Dean cause our other girls are not doing much, what does everyone think?

P.s i wish Emily Webley-Smith was high enough as i still remember that great and entertaining match she played against Klara Zakopolova :)

As much as I love Em and remember with joy and pain at the same time against Zakapolova a few years back I would have to say that the 2 Kats and Eleanor should get automatic QWCs rather than Jade Em or Amanda. I wouldn't be surprised to see Amanda give the grass court season a miss and play the clay events where the field quality will be diluted. Would be smart idea to get her ranking back to 300s and maybe higher.

saw Emily win at Wimbledon years ago and she was good on grass. sadly after all the injuries she is not the same player. I think she will get a WCQ though. Anyone in top 250 normally gets a WC so that would be Konta Watson Broady Murray possibly Moore. Normally 8 qwc included Junior Wimby from last year. However I saw Mandy Carreras last year does not have the game for grass I think a waste of a qwc
So Jade Windley Lisa Whyburn Emily definitely then take your pick but I think it should be Eleanor Dean Katy Dunne and Katie Boulter don't see anyone else sorry that includes Anna Smith who got won last year and was never in the match.

I wouldn't be surprised to not see Eleanor at all this grass court season, think its just as likely that she continues to acculumate ranking points in 10ks around europe. From a personal point of view I hope I'm wrong.

Jo and Hev will get in main draw via thier ranking. Hev has 0pt mandatories to be replaced with highest non scorers, plus whatever she gains in the meantime.

Joko should pick up the few points needed to climb another 8-10 places

It would be very sad for Eleanor not to have a crack at Junior Wimbledon if she is given the chance.   She must have a good chance of winning it and if the worst happens and injuries interfere with her career again,  that would be an important achievement for the rest of her life.

Based on not a lot, I agree. Eleanor hasn't shown any signs of wanting a WC into any of the GB 25ks, or anything like that. But, as KK says, it'd be a shame - and maybe her team were waiting to see how the first few months back went before forming any concrete plans.

Do people think there's more chance of Katie B being given a Q WC on the basis that, a bit like Kyle last year, she's also doing juniors and so it'd be good warm-up for the juniors ?
