On a different (DC-related) subject, Muzz is reported as saying today that he doesn't know why they don't make Davis Cup mandatory. He might well have hit the nail on the head - the top players might want to play DC, but they often seem to fear that if they do, they are giving an advantage to their rivals who miss it out.
The current method of trying to tempt players to take part, i.e. awarding ATP ranking points for World Group live rubber wins, is both unfair and largely ineffective (because for a top player, winning an ATP 500 event takes much less effort than winning lots of DC rubbers over 3 or 4 separate weeks, and if you aren't even in the World Group, it's no incentive at all) but if they did away with that and instead said that players had to make themselves available for each DC tie (or maybe at least 2 per year) and otherwise had to take zero-pointers (in the same way as they can count less optionals if they fail to play four 500-series events), that might go a long way towards solving the problem.
Obviously there could be collusion with captains over this (e.g. "I'm making myself available (whisper) as long as you don't pick me") but it would be more effective at removing the perceived advantage of skipping DC than any other method I can think of.
Agree with all the above, however it strikes me as a touch hypocritical that Andy is recommending it being mandatory on the tournament he decides to play, when he's opted out in the last couple of years.
Iknow I'm a bit late to the party on this story but I thinkit's a great idea from Andy, and I don't believe it's the first time he's mentioned it or something similar though I'm struggling to remember specifics. However, the immediate issue this idea throws up is the logistics of it all, what constitutes a "top player"? We have one guy in the top 100 so selection isn't I problem but what about countires that have many top 50 players and a top doubles team or two? How would you solve this? ( it's also one of the problems I have with points for DC play, along with many, many others!)

imoen, I believe the theory is it wouldn't be mandatory to play as such but it would be mandatory to make yourself available, ie if you're not good enough and not picked, then fine, but if you make yourself unavailable even though your country wants you to play, you get a big fat 0 in your 18 ranking events

Well an absolutely predictable Day 1, it was to my mind always huge odds on on ending 1-1.
Trouble is nothing much is predictable from here on, including tomorrow's doubles. I guess Andy's fitness and comfort level will come into play here. If it was just about the doubles I would want the best pair out there and for me that's Andy and Colin. BUT if he is getting more back twinges again or whatever, then there is clearly a case for saving Andy for Sunday and playing Colin and Jonny, clearly a very good established pair and probably favourites, just not as much as Andy and Colin.
I'm kinding of thinking it will be Coiin and Jonny, but very much a decision to be taken more than ever by these close to the coalface.
And as for Sunday, I have no great feeling as to how either match will go other than probably close.
I think GB are just about favourites in that I think we are doubles favouries ( whoever plays ) and the best bet on the singles are for them to be shared 1-1.
Basically, I don't think it would be a huge shock if the final score was 3-2 or 4-1 either way.
Not a scoop as it has already been tweeted, but Muzza was moving well and serving hard this morning. He will definitely play with Colin this afternoon.
Having said that, he did lose 2-1 in a best of 3 point tie break to Leon Smith at the end of practice. Mind you, Leon was serving from halfway between the baseline and the service line. Didn't stop Leon celebrating the win though. They all seem in good spirits.
Watched Jonny Marray and Rosco having a great hit on the outside court as well. So good to see.

Ha! Those are the rules used when playing my 7 year old.
Hmm. I was hoping Andy would be saved for the singles tomorrow. If Dodig plays as well as yesterday he'll be a handful. Maybe Andy feels that he needs the extra clay practice more than rest.
Suspect that if he has made the time to play ... and bothered to do the brief transition to clay ... he is absolutely determined that they will win this tie, and not really prepared to do anything less than his fullest (whether that's wise or not) to ensure it happens.
I'm still hoping Johnny will play. We've got a great dubs specialist in him, and I think it would be great for him and the team to get more people involved.
It also may be the last time he gets a look in if Ross gets back up to fitness quickly, and he's done Colin and our country proud over the last couple of years.
