RE: Week 15 - WTA $235K - Katowice, Poland Clay

I recall Laura's serve being even more unreliable for periods last year than it has ever really been this year, and certainly in these clay stats from kundalini it looks there very hit and miss even when she was getting decent results.

It would though, as so many have said, help her so very much if she could get it at least consistently reliable, and one can't help feeling that it could even be an asset. Frustrating.

Further to that, I actually recall arguing against a theory expounded at one poimt last year that Laura's whole game was falling apart with her serve difficulties. I argued that her general game seemed in remarkably good shape considering.

When her serve did generally significantly improve later on in the year, she rather showed the strengths of her general game.

As I said, I think she is improving ( too ) slowly but surely this year, but again needs that serve to improve, and stay improved !

I think Laura's serve was probably at its best in the grass court season last year, just before she showed big improvements in other areas of her game. Since then it has been up and down, but it is the obvious thing to highlight being the one thing that can be judged on the live score stats.

Laura has lost an exceptionally high number of very close matches in recent weeks and if she keeps plugging away these sort of runs do tend to even themselves out. If she starts losing matches without being competitive then I will be much more worried. Fed Cup could have a big influence on her confidence levels.

Yes, Tony, I am not sure that Laura is all that far away from playing really well again.

And however much more many of us hoped for this year, based on the.last 12 months it is worthy of note that her R1 win last week has pushed her up to a CH of WR 39 in this week's rankings, equaling Heather's recent times record British woman high. She is running at no 72 in this year's "race".

"Was a really great clay court match, lots of long rallies ending in winners and Laura's movement has really improved. She collapsed after she got broken in the 3rd set - there was a ball that looked so in to me and Laura but the umpire thought otherwise and then she also had a very easy putaway shot that she missed by miles It's also worth mentioning that she seemed to have cold or sth as she was coughing a few times."

I quoted that on the last page Julia, yes worrying about the ongoing chest problem. Seems though that her movement has improved since she has started on the clay which is encouraging.

Sorry Phil, I'm  only half following things at the mo..... of on travels tomorrow !

I feel very sorry for her - but also much respect for the way she keeps bouncing back, despite the knocks.  Suspect the chest prob, or the treatment for it, will certainly weaken her which would explain the fall-off in 3rd sets.
