Fichman is in fine form, especially on clay, having benefited from the same South American Fed Cup incepted block that helped Genie past Laura in Charleston.
She came through tough qualifying at the two clay WTA events in Acapulco & Bogota - pushing Schiavone to a tough third set in the MD of the latter - and also the 125K in Cali
She also won a $25k on clay in Port St.Lucie at the start of the year.
She lists her favourite surface as clay and plays there most of the time - only 2 matches for her this year have not been on clay (and both of those were losses)
Including Fed Cup, she is 17-5 on clay in singles this year.
Now, Elena has repeatedly shown herself to be a great fighter, utterly redoubtable and admirable.
I hope she wins and like Kevin Keegan, will 'love it' if she does.
But I think this one may be too much first time out.
Had she had a few kinder rounds behind her, to ease back in, then, maybe - though this $25k is quite tough. But the draw here has been very unkind.
Hope I'm wrong

I agree with Tony that she will play today even if she doesn't win, but will have a big letdown either in the following round or later on in the tournament. Fichman has good clay court form, but Bally is a class above her at her best.
Despite Elena tweeting an hour ago that she was next on court, and both matches that were then in progress having finished, Elena is still not on court - they've leapfrogged her in the live scores.
The official USTA OOP is also singularly unhelpful, having not been updated, it is still displaying Tuesdays details.
Ho hum, becoming a virtuoso thumb twiddler...
