Yes, I have, too. And it is sad. I wonder whether it has in part to do with the different ages at which people peak; women seem to start playing tour matches earlier and appear to be under much more pressure to do well early. Someone also (I think on this board?) commented at one point that women may need to avoid friendships because the paradigm for women's friendships is more collaborative, whereas for men's friendships, it's more competitive (ie men can whallop each other in a game and still be friends; women would feel guilty for whalloping a friend ... so, given the need to win, try not to form friendships). Would be a fascinating study for a doctoral student.
I'm impressed to see Heather be so open and honest about what has been a very difficult year for her. Clearly, her enthusiasm for the game led her to try and come back too early and convince herself she was ready (in more than one interview after a win she would say she is back to 100% and after defeat the following day admit that she wasn't).
She also explains what must go through the minds of most players when they are on a losing run, and how it is much more difficult to cope with in Women's tennis than other sports because of the lack of team-mates or friends who know what she is going through. It just shows why it is so dangerous to play when not 100% fit as once you get into a run of losing matches it gets harder and harder to get out the other end, even when fully fit.
The good news is that Heather does finally seem to be recovered from illness and back to having a much more positive frame of mind, and she will be going into the off-season looking forward to next year.
Hev does have the odd time when she gets down on herself, spring of 2012 was a similar tale, this one was obviously was much more serious. No mention of the GF, so that does sound positive. She definitely does struggle with girls on tour not reciprocating that friendly charm that she has. She shouldn't try to change who she is, as you'd struggle find a nicer human being on the planet.
didn't kno where to put this little silly season (off season) thing but apropos of nothing ...
despite her illness meaning she wernt around in the public eye so much Hev still was the 48th most popular player on the WTA site this year
laura either outside the top 50 or yet to be announced
No way Laura is outside the top 50, she was 25 last year and I reckon she will move up a few places.
Heather was 33 last year, but the photo of her in the crowd at the Australian Open brings back good memories of what was probably her best result of the season.
