It looks as if there must have been delays in Jackson today. Johanna's possible singles opponents play, then after rest Johanna plays the winner, then after another rest Johanna and Nicola play their doubles match against the top seeds.
I suspect that had she won the tie-break, she would've played on. Perhaps just a slight niggle or feeling under the weather as I can't believe the tie-break would have been that close had it been a more serious problem.
Looks like Joko has 46 points to drop off very soon, so need a good run next week if she isn't going to slide along way down the rankings Hope her injury is OK by then.
A top 100 scalp to start the year and then, well, very little reward - not beating a single player ranked higher than herself, in fact scarcely playing any as she keeps getting knocked out quite early.
It will be somewhat harder for her to push on now this year, as she has a lot of points concentrated in the June to September period, and improving then will be difficult. So, either form/results need to improve quickly, or she'll need a storming finish to the year, possibly to just stand still.
Soon we may well have a very competitive battle for GB #3, though perhaps nit quite at the ranking we would have hoped or even dared expect.

Yes, YoKo has that 46 points coiming off next week from last year's WTA tour event in Copenhagen , the same week as these 8 points go on , so she drops a net 38 points.
Pity with the way the draw had opened up after the lovely doubly way she started in R1.
R2: KONTA, Johanna/SLATER, Nicola (GBR/GBR) lost to MELANDER, Hilda/ROMA Sandra (SWE/SWE) 7-6(9) 2-6 [3-10]
Quite what happened in their R1 match against the #1 seeds remains, as yet, a mystery, hopefully they had a good win, rather than a retiral, and couldn't then repeat the trick.
All the doubles were put out twice in short order after all the delays in Jackson this week.
As I don't have anywhere near enough information to make a judgement about the decision to play for Johanna, I'm going to bed and hope to unravel it all in the morning.

So, credit for that excellent first win against the #1 seeds. And then a loss to lucky losers (and specialist doubles Brit bashers, now with 6 scalps this year so far in that format). All this on a schedule where it was known in advance that it would require 2 matches with minimum rest between them - after the withdrawal from singles, in a favourable draw.
I'm sure there's a simple explanation, but at the moment, I'm still a bit confused!

RE: Johanna's retirement from singles, 3 other girls retired during their second round matches which makes me think that food poisoning could be behind it or something like that... Either that or its just a series of unfortunate coincidences.
