RE: Week 14 - WTA Premier ($795,707) Charleston, SC, USA - Clay

Playing Genie in such an early round would not be her choice I am sure. They are such very good friends.

Laura up to GB no. 1 next Monday and currently 'virtual' no. 39 I think, so with luck she will make the top 40 too.

She's now 14 points ahead of Heather but Hev is still 12 points ahead in the Race. It could all hardly be closer! I hope they stay close, obviously while both moving up.

Great result Laura! Playing her great friend next. She ought to have too much power for Genie, but its never going to be totally straightforward is it?

Much what we thought in Osprey last year, when Genie won!

Well done. Laura! smile

Really can't credit the fact that Cabeza's parents allowed their daughter to go out into the world with a name that means literally in English "Star Head Candle", though as only the father's name is required, i.e. the first one quoted, she could easily be known as simply "Star Head!" !  disbelief

Note to Steven:  the patronymic & the matronymic, if you insist on using both, should not be hyphenated, no matter what the WTA draw sheets say! wink

First up on Court 3, so I guess it won't be streamed.

Brilliant! Feels like forever that we've had a straight set win from the girls at this level.

Laura should deal with Bouchard. Naturally it's difficult, I can't imagine how serena and Venus best each other in grand slam finals knowing they're shattering the other ones hopes. I'm disappointed to see two of the games most promising young starlets shoved off one of the televised courts though. Tennis is a sport that could massively benefit from showing off the upcoming talent to encourage other youngsters to take the sport up. So two junior grand slam winners should get better coverage IMO. I know when I'm watching mathes I'm neutral to I like to see how rising players are doing but the other matches are all seeds and Americans so its understandable.

Good luck Laura!

Just got in, and really pleased that Laura played well and won I hope she can continue her winning streak.

I feel happier she's already past Heather in the rankings as I think that was one thing holding her back in Miami (Not that I don't want competition between the two of them as I think it's positive for them both). I hope that JoKo can join in up in the echelons too.

Hopefully Laura's momentum will carry her forward, and happily her WR is up massively from Osprey.(120), saying that Genie's was 340, so maybe it's a tough matchup for her.

Didn't see the match, but won a little bit of cash this time from the bookies. Laura proving again that she has a clay court game. Will be tough next against Genie but its maybe her time to win as Genie won their first contest.

Toiling on a bad WiFi connection. Is Laura playing dubs this week?

No, I did look for her name on the draw but couldn't see it.

Shame you didn't see it Phil.  She really was quite impressive, despite lack of 1st serves in and far too many double faults.  If I'd just followed it on live score i would have been worried.  However, her demeanour was  so confident and strong and she produced plenty of blistering and accurate shots to get herself out of any potential trouble.  She was down points in quite a number of the games so it was closer than the scoreline suggests.  More consistent focus will  obviously be needed against tougher opponents.  Hopefully she will start to find that.  She 'seems' to be injury free.  (Though she made a comment in one of the recent interviews with Lisa, about Lisa having less injuries than her or something, which rang a slight alarm bell in my mind though.)

Bit of a coincidence that Laura's second match against BFF Genie Bouchard is also their second meeting on green clay, not a surface they play on much. I'm expecting a 3 set match but I'm optimistic that Laura can pull through.

A shame it's not on a televised court, but Laura gets her fair share of matches on a big court so can't complain too much.

Hey ! One of them had to lose

(That wasn't in response to your post Phil.  I was just trying to cheer myself up)

Thanks for that. Yes she does seem to have upped her game this week and liking the comment about confident demeanour. I really do believe that those not in the know are underestimating Laura's prowess on a fast clay court.
