As was said ,Thiem has been out as well and Oli's second match last week was pretty encouraging, so hoped for rather better.
But it is still early days and one can't necessarily equate how much recovery time and prep the two players have had. So really still too early to make any real judgements.
I'm very pleased that Oli didn't just roll over when things started to go wrong....he has done that from time to time in the past, and let things really get to him.
I agree that he'll need 2 or 3 more tournaments to be at his "real" level, which hopefully will be higher than his current ranking.
To be honest, I think that Thiem already is and probably will be much the better of the 2 players, definitely top 50, possibly a lot higher. So to lose is no disgrace and certainly no surprise, but I also had expected it to be closer than this.
Just a quick question in relation to this tournament, it's not strictly relating to British tennis but thought I'd put it in here all the same, hope that's ok.
I've just noticed when browsing the scoring of the Semi Final in this tournament that there appears to be a no adv rule in place.
It's the first time I've seen it employed in a male singles tournament and just wonder whether this is something used often or something which the ITF are trialing perhaps?
Earlier in the week there absolutely WAS advantage scoring in the Golding vs Thiem match, so I'm certain it was in use throughout. No trials at all in singles as far as I am aware ( thank God, not a fan). Perhaps there was another glitch in livescores.
Never ever ever dare go to no advantage scoring in singles !!!!
Tennis has a wonderful scoring system with irs various intrigues, and quite important / very important / climatic points, success for one or survival ( for that moment anyway ) for the other in that game, set or match. However we arrived at it, it's great.
I think it is awful that it is used in doubles, even if I haven't a huge interest in doubles. MTBs I can live with in doubles, but this next point the winner at deuce, nooo, and never ever in professional tennis singles , pleeeease !!
Was only going by something it said on the scoreboard on Bet365. Watched the scoring for a bit but it never went to Deuce so couldn't see whether that was actually the case.
Did wonder if it was possibly a delayed tournament in which those running the tournament had scrapped the deuce system in an attempt to speed things up.
Given the nature of the tournament, not easy to find an answer but agree that the no adv scoring system would be a poor idea.
Oli and Dominic will know each other well as they were direct contemporaries in juniors. Oli finished 2011 as WR3 and Thiem as WR4. I think its fair to say that Dominic has significantly outperformed Oli in 2012 on the pro tour, but this particular match was so soon after Oli's comeback that its unfair to draw too much from it. Still expected more than 2&2
It wouldnt surprise me if Vesely, Thiem and Saville are all inside the top 200 by the end of 2013 (Vesely is almost there now) the other members of the top 4 club in Juniors 2011. Oli and Bjorn Frantangelo (#5) are some way behind theothers, but it is a marathon, not a sprint, after all.
