R1: WHYBOURN, Lisa (GBR) 281 lost to BELZUNCE-CROMPIN, Ana (ESP) Q UNR 5-7 2-6
On the surface that seems like a very strange result, noting in the Spaniards history that I can find suggests she had that in her. If Lisa plays doubles later, one might presume heir is nothung wrong with her, and that i was just a very bad outing indeed. Almost hoping for a RET in the doubles.

I take Steven's advice above on board, but UNR with a high in 600's, even with injury concerns and mitigations, does not mean one could expect a victory against WR281, let alone in such a comprehensive manner. Had the result been against say, Lucy Brown, given her current ranking - and solely based on the relative rankings of the two players, I would find it less flummoxing.

Lisa has already lost 5-7 2-6 - but that was probabaly expected given the Spaniards recent results
Really? Which recent results suggested this unranked player (CH 670, 3 years ago) would have been expected to beat Lisa, who is ranked at 279, her new CH.
I had a look at Belzunce-Crompin's Spanish pro tour record to see if that shed any light on the mystery of why she is doing so well here and what she was doing between early 2010 and late 2012.
She didn't play any of those events in 2010-2011 but played (just) two in October and November last year. In the first, she handed out bakery products like confetti through qualifying and the main draw before coming up against top seed Rocio de la Torre Sánchez, who beat her 5 & 0. The same player, who is ranked 371 at the moment, beat her 2 & 2 in the November event.
ITF results since then suggest she is improving and far too strong to be unranked, but nothing before this week has hinted that she might be capable of the wins (in terms of ranking scalps and scorelines) that she has recorded here and I still haven't found out why she was out for so long, i.e. whether it was injury, college or some other reason.
Looking on the bright side, if there were any tournaments the Brits were going to do really badly in (and they haven't all done badly in this one yet, of course) these 15Ks are the least bad ones to do it in because the rewards are so paltry relative to the strength of the field. Of course, that only holds if the Brits come back strong in the weeks that follow.
Meanwhile, Naomi Cavaday asks a question many of us have been wondering about:
"Final round of qualis in Sunderland for Ivana... there were byes here, where were all the young Brits?!"
"still can't get over it, where are all the young brits? I was dying to play these tournaments at 15/16 #whereareyoubritishtennis ???"

Err no, paulisi, Lisa's loss was most certainly not "probably expected given the Spaniard's recent results". It is a big shock and on the face of it looks very poor from Lisa.
Steven gave context as to why Belzunce-Crompin was really better than your typical unranked player and given Jade's lack of form that qualifying win wasn't to me exactly that big a shock.
Beating Lisa is, howver you want to look at it. It's a SHOCK !!
I hadn't quite factored in Lisa losing when predicting 4 wins. C'mon, girls !
Ms Cavaday asks a very good question. One answer is a decent selection of the more promising young Brits are away in South America and Asia competing in G1 and GA juniors (Boulter, Wallace, Dart, Plews), albeit only Katie Boulter among them has done well.

And, why are we losing our good people from the system (Cavaday herself, Borwell, Felgate et al.) only to have them raising/mentoring youngsters to be prospects and world beaters for other nations?

As in R1 last week, all the GB v non-GB matches ended up going the wrong way Both the unranked Brits put up decent performances though, by the looks of it.

Edit: just realised the rankings in the original post were out of date (I'd rashly assumed they were up to date without checking since the draw didn't come out until Tuesday only for it to gradually dawn on me that they weren't the rankings I'd been posting on Twitter!) - now updated

Probably because the other nations have better young prospects at the moment, sadly. Though to be fair, there are a few non-Brits coaching GB prospects at the moment too.
