Sloppy game not to break and then holds to 30 including a very jammy call on a long second serve.

Disappointing tame break.

Sugita got a bit more consistent but James gave that game away in the end

James then overpressed with aggressive returns to try and break back.

Sugita soaked up the pressure then won the set with a nice cross court deep winner.

i remember watching sugita beat alex at Nottingham ch qualies a few years back (rain forced indoors), he was so quick, plus he could handle pace very well. Alex's best moment came from mixing it up a bit rather than trying to blast it past him, hopefully James can have more luck in the 2nd set, was pretty close.

When Sugita was inconsistent in Set 1 he still managed to win his games.

James has gone consistently inconsistent since the end of the first set while Sugita has kept his level.

James just got broken - he has lost his composure this set.

He needs to get his head together and pick his shot, rather than swinging from the hip.

Sugita mostly seems to be hitting balls to a decent length and James is currently just making the errors. If the error count went down this match could still turn around as he certainly has the firepower to out hit the Japanese player.
