What a superb series of tournaments. A proper week off to train and recuperate, then a Challenger!
"Mid-ranking GB man plays Challenger to test himself at a higher level, aiming to stop playing Futures in successful!" read the newspaper headlines......spread the word, Ed, spread the word.
Had a chance to chat to Ed before his match today, I hope I didn't jinx his chances. He said he intends to start playing challengers at the beginning of the summer, and felt his improvement this season was due to a good offseason where he was able to make a couple improvements to his game. He said he wasn't tired after playing all this year's matches and was very upbeat.
Evo had a MTO during the early part of the second set ( wrist taped), but after that moved up a couple of gears and didn't look back.
Smethy had a very long two set match which included a remarkable comeback from 6-1 down in the second set TB.
The guy that Josh played is a real enigma, has a twin brother who also plays on the tour, but basically can either play unbelievable tennis or absolute *****.
Thanks for the report, Phil. Scott Griekspoor does seem to have been playing a lot better than his ranking would suggest this week. In notice Kevin is a fair bit higher ranked than Scott (722 v 1139) - are we sure they don't substitute in the better twin (or the one who feels better on the day) in order to maximise the ranking of one while not bothering too much about the other? LOL
A bit shocked by Ed's loss, but he's still the most consistent Brit around at the moment (8 QFs out of 8 this year, winning his last 6 in a row) and Minar has been top 200 so may be capable of playing at that level from time to time.
Josh has played Minar once before, beating him 7-6(3) 7-5 in a Futures Final in Glasgow in 2011. They have very similar career highs - Josh 184 in 2009, Jan 177 in 2008.
The Futures H2H for the 2-Dan semi is 3-1 to Evo - 5 & bakery wins in 2007/11 and a 3rd set tiebreak win in 2009 for him and a 1 & 4 win in 2010 for Dan S.

If anyone goes to Sunderland later today it would be appreciated if updates from the Dan v Dan match could be provided. The ITF live scores site will apparently cover courts 1 and 3 where as the exciting all brit clash is on court 2.

Phil. Any info on the specific aspects of his game he's been working on so successfully. He looks very ripped, in the Andy mould, compared to a while back so I'm sure his conditioning has given him an advantage too.
Also curious as to his match. Fair result? Lots of chances to break but not converting today or well beaten on the day? Also, many have suggested he has no big weapons, and is very solid and tough to roll over - is that what you saw, or is there more to his game we can look forward to?

Can't really add to what I said previously, and I didn't see much of his match, but what I did see is a very solid consistent player who is very good at grinding players down. I also would say that Minar shouldn't be underestimated, capable of playing at a higher level than his ranking, and playing well this week.
I was following the tiebreak while walking through town - really hoped (and for a while even believed) he was going to manage the multiple comeback from a set down, a break down down in the 3rd and 0-4 down in the tiebreak.
As for you Bob, I'll have you know that your latest pun is of far too high a standard for this board - wish I'd thought of it to tweet after Ed's loss yesterday, when it would probably have sounded even more appropriate
