A very interesting read. Thanks. It's easy to say in hindsight that Draper was good for British tennis, and I do fear the lack of legacy that Downey won't bring. But I do think that there are good people around e.g. Judy, so maybe their talent will help our talent to be successful despite the LTA.
We have no properly home grown players in any case. All of our top players have had significant periods abroad. In Jamie's case the LTA ruined his forehand.
Yes, it's completely wrong and misleading to say all the money poured into JoKo is now reaping rewards (well done Draper) if he also poured the same amount of money into 5000 other players where it was money down the drain and bearing no fruit at all. (Bad journalism).
However, Downey does seem to be remarkably lacking in vision - the Davis Cup debacle was amazing and truly funny.
As you say, paulisi, I don't envy them - blinkin' difficult job, made a hundred times worse because of the AELTC and Wimbledon and the fragmentation of power and money within UK tennis.

Am I right in remembering that Jo's recent up turn has coincided with moving her training base to Spain ?

Absolutely. In my view, that new team (the Spaniards over there and the mental coach one who's more based in London, I believe) have been completely inspirational. And have worked wonders on technique, not only confidence etc (that forehand is a different beast from 24 months ago, whatever Jo says).
However, I guess that Briggs (and Draper) would say that the legwork had been done by the LTA and without that, the Spanish miracle would never have happened (which has some truth but is was one of those rather daft arguments that goes back and back).
Got to agree with CD here - plus it wasn't the LTA or Draper that discovered Konta, more the other way round - though please correct me if I'm wrong. She was going nowhere under Drapers initiatives/plans etc etc.
I don't know about Konta's funding, but she received no wildcards from anybody much, except a few in Spain in 2009, until she became a British citizen in 2012. I'd presume that if she wasn't on the list for WCs, she wasn't on the list for funds.
So not only is Roger Draper now a 'global business advisor' at Boston Consultancy, but he is now Executive Chairman of his girlfriend's Barrister Chambers and looking to shake everything up by introducing a 'corporate' structure because it needs shaking up and he has such 'excellent credentials'
Frankly, I'd tell them to run for the hills but hey....

As an outsider you can ask the simple questions, he said. How do you keep the tradition and move with the times? I had that running Wimbledon. There are a lot of things about history and tradition that can hold you back.
Don't really remember Roger D running Wimbledon but then he always did like to put a positive spin on things.......
I think you can tell a lot about people from small things.
I was at Sutton TC once, watching a British Tour event. Ben Draper was playing, against Adam T-B, I seem to remember. And Mr Draper was watching, along with a couple of women (mothers of other players, I believe), on the walkway up high.
THere were other matches on the courts next to them, obviously, including a women's match that was very close.
THere was a disputed line-call in the men's match and all hell let loose - tons of shouting and screaming and theatricals. And Draper seemed to think that (a) his son was automatically right and (b) more importantly, that is was the only thing of any importance, and that Adam's behaviour was a disgrace, but that overall it was quite amusing. And one of the women caught my eye and said something like 'isn't it awful how Adam's calling the ball?'
And Draper looked at her like a little lap dog, good girl, and gave me the same look. It was like the King expecting everyone to lick his boots.
So I said loudly: Frankly, it's disgraceful how both of them are behaving, they're showing no respect whatsoever for the match on the court next to them, frankly, the umpire should be here and put a stop to it".
And the woman went white and actually said in a hushed whisper "but that's Mr Draper's son".
And I said "I know, that's irrelevant, I'm a qualified umpire in France and it's unacceptable".
And Draper suddenly shut up.
My son played Jack when they were both about 10. This was at a very low level event in Sussex. At the end of the event Mr Draper did a little speech. Which was a little odd as Im sure none of the kids knew who he was and nor did most of the parents. Never seen that before or after.
