Melzer's having a good week: he's seeded fifth in the singles & has reached the final of that, too, claiming the scalp of Denis Istomin (3) on the way.
It's awkward, isn't it. I don't particularly warm to Petzschner and won't really probably ever be able to support him, but people do things under pressure that they may later regret and might never do again. And he may feel he can't 'fess up because of the possible consequences to his innocent partner (what would the consequences be? Would they default the match?) The irony is that they were trouncing the Poles anyway ...
Must admit that when the lovely Messrs Marray and Neilsen -- at a crucial point, with tons at stake and no hint of a protest from their opponents -- stopped the match and pointed out that Marray had hit the net, the 2011 USO final was the first thing that I thought of. What a contrast! One of the reasons why I would support Marray at this point whomever he was playing against.
Anyway, sorry that Messrs Inglot and Butorac lost, as I would very much have liked to see them win. But a good week for them overall.
I would very much imagine Petzschner rregrets this in retrospect. Having your name quite correctly associatef with "cheat" for evermore can't be good.
There would have been no problem at all if he had confessed straight off that the ball had come off his leg. But he was digging a hole from that moment he turned away and celebrated and then lie just followed lie.
