RE: Week 11 - Great Britain F7 ($10,000) Bath -Hard

We seem to be continuing last/this week's theme of (in which I always seem to be at least partly implicated ashamed) of veering well off the subject of tennis biggrin

No problem with a bit of pedantry smile but legally and politically is exactly what I was using "effectively" as shorthand for (in the "although it may be stuck out in the southern Indian Ocean, it is effectively ..." sense)

Anyone seen much of Richard Gabb? He seems to be consistently qualifying and picking up points on a regular basis. One to watch?

He's 21 and has reached 2 ITF $10k SFs in his career to date, which I think suggests he has limited potential as a high level tour player. And he plays a LOT of tournaments. This comment subject to all the usual caveats: you never know, everyone develops at a different pace, harder to shine as a teenager these days, we should big up our youngsters, etc. Most of the qualitative commentary from those who have watched him suggests he has a very pleasing, consistent game without any major weaknesses, but that he doesn't have the power or weapons to overpower his opponents - if he serves very well, probably tough to break down, otherwise.......

There's an interesting discussion on another thread about WTA/ITF vs ATP/ITF ranking points systems, and whilst the men's game remains strongly biassed towards tournament winners and finalists, rather than those that win a match or two relatively often, players like Richard may struggle to make an impact. Personally I prefer players who can win tournaments every time....

Seen him a few times and never seen anything to indicate that he has much of a future in the game.

I was at the Glasgow tournament in October Ashley Hewitt was definitely one to watch. He was out for a long time with a leg injury

That Glasgow tournament currently stands out as a real anomaly in Ashley Hewitt's pro career so far with no real backup to it.

I believe the Glasgow courts are very fast. I take it that he appears to have a serve and general game suited to fast courts ?

Glasgow courts are insanely fast.

Yeah, Ashley has a big serve, and can win a lot of free points.

 That's impressive from JWH.

As been noted before, it is very bad luck on others in the qualifying tournament when players don't get round to entering on time.

Goodall against Gabb again should be interesting. I would guess Josh will make it through this time, but who knows.
