Final: (4) Lewis Burton & Dan Evans WR 971 defeated Jan Minar & Marek Semjan (CZE/SVK) WR 2350 by 5-7 6-1 [10-5]
Excellent win for the lads!
Lewis and Dan haven't played together for a while but did have a run of success a few years back when they did. Will be nice to see them hopefully team up next week as well.
Evo v Rice was a bit of strange match that wasn't really as close as the scoreline suggests. In the first set Dan frequently started games badly but he played all the big points well and deservedly won the set. The second was a crazy affair, Dan completely lost his focus both at the start and end of the set at least partially because he was furious at the hideous shrieking coming from a women's match on a nearby court. Dave went *3-1 up, Dan took the next 3 games to lead *4-3 and then lost all but 1 point in the next 3 games to throw away the set. Dan played a great game to break at the very start of the third, to his own disgust and fury he handed the break back with a stinker of a game but recovered well to break again and lead *2-1. After that he was completely in the zone and never gave Dave a sniff of breaking back. It was one of those matches where there was a certain inevitability about the result, watching it I never felt that anything other than a Dan win would be the result. To respond to an earlier point, Dan didn't show any signs of tiredness*. I don't think there has ever been much a problem with his fitness levels and he is seemingly in very good shape.
* The exception being taking a while to recover from a monster rally of about 40-45 shots where he covered pretty much every inch of the court two or three times over.
Corrie v Farquharson was a disappointing match as Tom struggled quite badly. I don't know to what extent it affected his game but he had a real problem with a couple of his fingers, I don't know if he had blisters or cuts or anything else but he had the trainer on 3 times (twice for quite a long time) either taping or plastering his fingers. Ed didn't really do anything special but always looked a cut above his opponent. After the first set Tom clearly didn't have any belief that he could get back in the match and his second set performance was a pretty limp affair. I'm hoping that this was at least partly down to his problematic fingers because if not it was a really poor showing in such a big match for him.
In the doubles final it was pretty ropey performance in the first set, especially from Dan, but they turned round in the second set and Dan played outstanding in the MTB. All in all deserved their win.
