3 qualifiers in the semi's. That doesn't happen very often!
Well yes but one of them shouldn't really have been in the quallies. Of course if Gabb had beat Corrie all 4 semi finalists would have been qualifiers.
Probably, but you never know. Rice played very well yesterday and added the scalp of an inform Willis today. You would obviously expect Evo to beat him but it is hardly a done deal. Farquharson is also on a good run and might trouble Corrie whose results this week haven't been overwhelming.
Haven't seen Dave play singles for about 18 months, but always got the impression if his serve is on fire, he's hard to beat. Not the greatest movement imo, but very powerful
Marcus never recovered from a bad call early in the first set. Was an awful call and he had a 5minute debate with the umpire after which didn't do him any good. Nothing seems to bother Dave and he served well on the big points when Marcus threatened to get back into it. Got chatting to Marcus' 'volunteer mentor', guy called Dave Lewis, ranking targets are 350-400 by year end and 250 by next May.
That'll be Gary Lewis. He's sponsoring Marcus, very positive guy who believes that Marcus is a force to be reckoned with.I wouldn't argue with him,he knows what he wants.
For the second week in a row in Bath, a men's GB $10k Futures event has an all GB SF line-up. Alright, there were only 10 and 13 non-Brits in the MD line up, but part of this was the success of Brits actually making it through qualies (7 and 6 respectively).
For the second week in a row, not a single GB woman has reached the QF of a GB $10k/$15k, the latter event including the bulk of our ladies ranked GB 6 and below, the former admittedly with a much weaker line-up on paper.
The perceived wisdom in the press, and indeed the party line from many TV/online pundits is that "GB women's tennis" is in pretty good health, and that huge strides have been made on the women's side.
I wouldn't want to disguise the massive gap at the top end of GB men's tennis ranks 1-300 (which is after all where the focus ought to be) but I actually think the "base" standard of GB men's tennis has been steadily improving in the last couple of years to the point that none of our top 25 players tend to get rolled over and the bar to get into this "elite" group is climbing steadily higher.......pushing up average standards across large numbers of players could be the key to breakthroughs at the next level.............
In fact, if this improvement continues, there will come a point where the main barrier to a sustained rankings breakthrough from our men could be their conservative/low risk choice of tournaments offering little upside reward, rather than obvious lack of talent, preparation or competitiveness.........
I'm really hoping Ed and Dan do well this week and again next week, then with this points cushion in the bag, go on to make a sustained Challenger effort up until the grass court season......as much to see them do well, as to show the way for the other players.......
Agree with you Korriban at the moment Ed Corrie and Dan Evans seem to be the ones to watch. The standard does seem to be improving in the mens.
One thing I wondered with British Futures many of them are playing the same players on the circuit so would know their game. Also many would be good friends so would the competitive edge not get dilluted by familiarity??????//
I think the Kyle Oli strategy of playing abroad would be better as they have unfamiliar opponents.
